  • June 16, 1994 Western Carolinian Editorial The Smoking Section Continued from Page 6 Butt's announcing and segues are good and he can read most of the PSA's without a glitch. His radio persona, while not developed, is friendly and likable, sometimes even funny. Like Todzilla, he needs to record his shows and listen back to them afterwards. It can't hurt. 10:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. May 31st. The radio's still on but this time it's Elrick Williams doing the late-night show. Elrick doesn't say much, he simply plays the tunes which, for the most part, are really good, reflecting a knowledge of his format. This show is geared towards the night-owls who stay up late. I wonder if anybody besides myself is listening at this hour. I doubt it. And that;s too bad because his show is jamming and flowing. No dead-air, his announcing being good and his reading adequate. Wonder what he'd be like doing Todzilla's gig— The next time the radio comes on is June 3rd at 7:00 p.m., just in time to hear a show by a guy named Johnny Santana (Troy Sharpe). Johnny also hosts a Disco show on Saturday nights called "Disco Inferno" which airs at 8:00. Johnny's format is the same as Todzilla's and Butt's which is kind of irritating because, to use a cliche, Variety is the spice of life. Some more Rock or even Country would certainly beat the hell out of the blandness and predictability that occurs when you sit there and listen to the songs which the last Jock played an hour ago rearranged in a different order with two new titles thrown in per hour. That's right: same songs, different jock. How innovative! But what's even more irritating is listening to Johnny Santana talk — he's annoying, lacking all traces of a personality. Johnny can't read the News either, without mispronouncing words left and right. Want some dead air? It's there. During this particular show Johnny plays some requested Nirvana and, close to the end of the song, everything goes silent only to come back on three minutes later with Aerosmith's song, "Sweet Emotion." Combine an irritating format with an irritating personality and you've got a listener (me) who's ready to toss his radio RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS out into the street. My friends, who have arrived at my house midway through Santana's show, are begging me to turn Santana off but I relent: Research (no matter how painful it might be) is essential to a good article. Santana, on the other hand, should get a carload of blank cassettes and do countless air-checks until he comes across a formula (or personality) that he (and we) can live with. Our patience is rewarded at 10:30 p.m. (June 3rd) with "The Fallout Shelter," a nightly Alternative Music show. Tonight it's being hosted by Aaron Kraus (a.k.a. "Steven Bach") and Scott Swift (a.k.a. "Alladdin Sane"). The show starts off strong and it stays that way throughout until a John Mellencamp song is played. Mellencamp? Alternative? In this weird neck of the woods, anything is possible. . A show to stay up for this summer? Possibly. I tune back in June 6th, 9:00 a.m., to catch Magic Mike's morning show and, with the exception of Mike's voice, the music sounds exactly the same as the music played on Todzilla's show ... and Butt's show ... and Santana's show. There's no real deviation from the norm. Some Block Formatting would be really helpful here because I'm bored, feeling bad that I'm actually skipping class to listen to this guy. Mike's on-air delivery is okay but he keeps hitting these little 5 second dead-air pockets in-between PSA's. He can read all right, too,"but everything about Magic Mike seems forced and contrived. It's 1:00 p.m., June 6th. Elrick's on the air playing the same music Magic Mike did on his morning show, |ust arranged differently. Nothing like an original idea, eh? The next time I listen is 11:00 p.m., June 6th. They've let Scott Swift (Alladdin Sane) host "The Fallout Shelter" (10:30 p.m. -12:30 a.m.) on Sundays, Mondays, and Saturday nights. The dreaded Johnny Santana fills the Wednesday night gap. Scott has a good sense of humor and he makes the most of his foray into the world of Block Formatting. He also has the good sense (and taste) to avoid the little snippet of "God Bless The USA" (an exercise in patriotic jingoism is there ever was one) by Lee Greenwood tagged at the end of WWCU's sign-off. So what does all of this say about Power 91? That, for the most part, there's some talented people on the air who, with a little practice, will sound really good come Fall Semester; that Block formatting would reduce the "Music Monotony" S which has been a problem with the station for quite awhile; that the addition of maybe Country Music and Jazz would be welcome since one of Power 91's goals is. to 'serve the community'; that reading a PSA or the News before air-time might make the Jocks sound more professional, not to mention save them some embarrassment. I realize the possibility that I've written this screed for nothing. Nobody listens .. .to me, that is. But it's a funny old world, strange things happen, and maybe, if I keep on pushing, just maybe, WWCU will get better and articles such as these will become obsolete. Now that would be a welcome change. MY ARMY ROTC SCHOLARSHIP PUT ME IN THE HOSPITAL LAST SUMMER.
