Features March 17, 1994 Western Carolinian Segal's career "On Deadly Ground" with new release Colleen Vasconcellos StaffReporter Steven Segal, Joan Chen and Michael Caine star in "On Deadly Ground;" Segal's newest action adventure with an environmental twist. Hie movie opens at an Alaskan oil refinery that is blazing with fire and ready to explode at any minute. Segal is there, along with his crew, trying desperately to put out the fire. He finally does so by usinga shape charge to blow the oxygen away from the fire. This opens the movie in true Segal form. The viewer is then taken to a press conference where Michael Caine, the owner of the refinery, is explaining his reasons for the fire. Describing it as an accident, he vows that it will never happen again. However, the viewer soon sees a different reason for the fire. Caine, wanting to save a buck, has put faulty equipment in his refinery. This equipment has allowed oil to spill out into the Alaskan water supply, endangering the Eskimo nation and the environment in the process. Segal discovers the faulty equipment and realizes an oil spill is unavoidable. He then decides to research the problem in order to find a remedy. Caine learns of Segal's snooping and decides to eliminate him. Segal is trapped in an explosion, set up by Caine's lenchman andisleftfordead. An Eskimo tribe finds Segal and nurses himback to health. Hebefriends the tribe and learns their ways. Joan Chen, starring as the chief's daughter, tells Segal of the danger that the refinery is bringing to her people and the land. The only way to save har people is to destroy the refinery. Segal sets out to do just that. However, Caine finds out that Segal survived the explosion. Knowing Segal will try to destroy the refinery, Caine sends his men to stop him. One minute Segal is causing explosions and beating the crap out of people in bars. The next minute he is in the Eskimo spirit world. All the while talking about peace, love and the need to save theenvironment, Segal plans to blow up an oil refinery, sending its contents across the state of Alaska. I don't think so! I give "On Deadly Ground" one and a half shamrocks. Although it showed traces of Segal, the movie still didn't make it. The only thing this movie proved to be was a disappointment. Music, cont'd from 9 guys make Soul Music for the future as well as great dance tracks ("Robot Girl," "Out ComeTheFreaks"). Theyalsohavea twisted sense of humor. You might have seen the videos for "What Up, Dog?" and "Dad, I'm In Jail" on MTV's "Liquid Television" or heard their now-classic dance-comedy hit "Walk The Dinosaur." These sit along with gems like "Anything Can Happen," "Love Can Be Bad Luck" and the track that should have been on the sound-track for the movie "JFK" but wasn't: "11 Mph (Abe Zapp Ruder Version"). The sudden switch of musical styles may confuse some listeners but the grooves are real and funky with a lot of production tricks going on in the mix. Modem Soul & Pop doesn't get and better (or more genuine) than this. Avoid at your own risk. 10a: : "lOcc (1st) & Sheet Music" (DCC, 1990) 1 Occ was one of those groups who were able to make movies in your mind with music. Their first two albums (from 1972 and 1973), long unavailable on vinyl, were reissued and remastered onto one compact The longer you keep it to yourself the harder it is to make it 90 away. Often when a woman is raped, she tries to push it out of her mind, thinking It will Just go away. Except, this only makes all the bad feelings worse. What can help is talking about it. Talk to a friend, family member, counselor at the Counseling Center or your minister. THERE IS A WOT OUT OF THE SILENCE! RAPE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO LAST A LIFETIME. For more information regarding acquaintance / date rape, sexual assault or relationship violence, call 227-7303 or write. Student Coalition Against Acquaintance Rapt P.O. Box 3266 Cullowhee, NC 28723 (all correspondence will be confidential) disc and the sound is superb. The liner notes, written by engineer Steve Hoffman and rock Impresario Jonathan King, are informative but the music really speaks for itself. It's pop music of a very high order ranging in styles from folk to reggae to hard rock to classical. Think of The Beatles and Queen meeting Pink Floyd and The Firesign Theatre, and you're on the right track: Kevin Godley (drums) and Lol Creme (guitar and keyboards) later went on to record solo albums (checkout "L" and "Consequences") and direct videos (Godley's solo video work can be seen in U2's "Numb") after lOcc's fifth album "How Dare You!" in 1976. lOcc had a big hit here with "I'm Not In Love" in 1975 but they never really caught on, possibly because they were too far ahead of everybody. This music, after twenty years, still sounds fresh and modern...and funny. The bonus track (their single "Waterfall" from 1974) is a killer too, mixing vocal harmonies with backwards electric guitar. If you like Pop music that veers off the beaten path then you'll love this. Now if only DCC will re-release "lOOcc's," lOcc'c first live album (not "Live and Let Live" from 1977), then I';ll be happy. The Godley and Creme albums mentioned above aren't on disc, either. What's the deal, folks? '. SATURDAY MARCH 26,1994 8:00pm ■ 11:30pm in the UNIVERSITY CENTER GRANDROOM Come on out and join in the spring student celebration! sponsored by the WCU Resident Student Assoeial Association
