Dec. 19 vs. St. Francis: Rowe followed up her 30-point performance with a 23-point, 19 rebound game to lead WCU to a 79-75 win in the Navy Classic Tournament. Rowe's play in the tournament earned her SC player-of-the-week honors. fan. 3 atMorehead State: The presence of newcomer Beth Hall-Mason was not enough for the Lady Catamounts to overcome 22 turnovers as Morehead State slipped by Western 88-82. Hall-Mason, playing in her first game as a Catamount, scored 13 points, dished out four assists and pulled down four rebounds. Rowe once again led the Cats with 22 points. Jan. 5 at Louisville: Western finished their swing through Kentucky with a tough 104-57 loss to Louisville. With both Rowe and Garrett out of the starting line-up, the Cardinals rolled out to a 17-0 lead. fan. 8 vs. East Carolina: A 14-2 run midway through the second half helped the Cats overcome a seven point deficit and defeat East Carolina University 77-74 in WCU's firsthomegame in nearly amonth. Bissinger led a trio of Lady Cats scoring in double figures with 17 points. fan. 13 vs. University of South Carolina: Hall-Mason hit a driving reverse lay-up to give the Cats a 2-0 lead. The rest of the game was a nightmare. The one (and only) highlight of the night for WCU was combining with the Gamecocks for a NCAA record 66 three point field goal attempts. Men's Games: Dec. 17 at Tennessee: Western Carolina won their first-ever game againsta Southeastern Conference opponent as they came from behind to beat Tennessee 78-71. WCU led at the half, but 28 Catamount turnovers kept the Volunteers in the game. They took the lead in the second half, but the Cats would retake the lead. A Scott Bradley three-pointer in the closing moments sealed the win. Frankie King led the way for the Cats, as he poured in a season-high 35 points. Dec. 19 at Minnesota: Just two days after their surprise win over UT the Cats took the court again against a strong Division I school, this time coming up short 79-61. Dec. 30 at Duke: Western Carolina gave the number three ranked Duke Blue Devils all they could handle in the first half before falling in the second half 87-67. The Cats led for the first 14 minutes of the game before Duke's depth and size began to overpower Western. King again led the way for the Cats with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Jan. 3 at East Carolina: Western finally ended their long string of games against Division I schools as they were downed by the East Carolina Pirates 82-67. fan. 5 at Davidson: A furious second half rally by WCU fell just shortas the Cats lost their conference opener 68-64. The Cats cut a 13-point half-time deficit to just three points with 2:54 left but only hit three more field goals the rest of the way. Davidson hit their last six free throws to preserve the lead. fan. 8 vs. VMI: The Cats stopped a four- game losing streak with a sloppy, but effective, 68-58 win over the VMI. VMI had cut the Catamount lead to three, but the Cats put the game away at the free throw line. The Cats, shooting just over 60% for the year from the line, hit nine of 12 in the last 2:12. fan.Wvs.Marshall: WCU won its second straight SC game, 71-63 over Marshall. The Cats looked almost unstoppable in the first half, racing out to a 16-point lead. Marshall cut the lead to three by half-time and had two leads in the second half, but Western went to a zone defense and held the Herd without a field goal for almost ten minutes. fan. 13 at Furman: The Cats returned to the road and saw their short two-game winning streak come to an end in a 76-64 loss to Furman.
