  • Western Carolinian September 16,1993 Features Page 9 No need to see Steven King's Needful Things Colleen Vasconcellos Features Writer Ed Harris ("The Firm") and Max Von Sydhow star in Stephen King's latest horror, "Needful Things." Von Sydhow stars as Leland Gaunt, the owner of a new novelty shop named Needful Things opening in quiet Castle Rock, Maine. Full of charm and culture, Von Syd how worms his way into the hearts of the community's inhabitants; however, he is not all that he appears to be. Through the merchandise in Needful Geology department offers dinosaur class Jamie Baize Staff Reporter Western is offering quite a few new courses this semester that many people don't know much about. One of these is a dinosaurs class offered by the Geology department. Dr. James Reynolds is teaching this course that wasn't even made available until after last Spring semester. With about 80 students enrolled, it is obvious that there is a recently renewed interest in dino saurs. The class looks at the many theories of why the dinosaurs became extinct, the different species of dinosaurs that existed, and many more aspects. Much is involved in learning about these areas. Chemistry, physics, biology, botany, geology, zoology, astronomy, mathematics and, of course, palentology play major roles. So if any of this sparks your interest, contact the Geology department and find out more about it. Don't forget, it fulfills a science general education requirement! Things, Von Sydhow plays on the emotions and needs of every person in Castle Rock. An old high school jacket, a Mickey Mantle baseball card, even the first edition of a favorite book— Needful Things has it all for a small price. Curiosity and need draw people into the store as they see old memories in the window. Von Sydhow charms them, makes them feel comfortable, and shows them what they've always wanted. He lowers the price to what they can afford, but they must do him a small favor. In order to get what they want, they must pull a prank on someone else in town. Some of the pranks are harmless, but others are sadistic and dangerous. People are soon being killed, and property is being destroyed. All the while, Von Sydhow crosses off names in a small black book. Soon everyone in Castle Rock is against each other. The Sheriff of Castle Rock, Ed Harris, begins to realize something evil is in Castle Rock. Very suspicious of Von Sydhow, Harris begins to do a little research and finds some unbelievable evidence. By the time Harris makes the connection, it is too late. Quiet Castle Rock is no longer quiet. A full-fledged riot breaks out in the middle of town. All the while, Von Sydhow is watches from a distance, calmly smoking a cigarette. It is up to Harris to somehow protect Castle Rock from Leland Gaunt and save the town from itself. "Needful Things" started out a good movie, but after a while it became very stupid. Instead, of hiding in my boyfriend's arm, I found myself laughing at all of the scary parts. I felt like going outside and checking the poster to make sure this was a Stephen King movie. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I give "Needful Things" 2 stars. I was very disappointed in the movie. The special effects were good, but there weren't that many. If you want a good laugh, see "Needful Things," but ifyou want to seea horror movie in true Stephen King form, forget it. 10:00am - 4:30pm September 22 - 25 (Wednesday - Saturday)
