  • Page 8 Features September 9,1993 Western Carolinian The Fugitive Locally filmed movie hits Sylva theater Colleen Vasconcellos Staff Reporter In "The Fugitive," Harrison Ford ("Indiana Jones,") starsas Dr. Richard Kimball, a vascular surgeon accused of murdering his wife. On the run, Ford sets out to prove his innocence by finding the man responsible for his wife's death. The movie opens with disturbing flashbacks to the murder, instantly putting the viewer on the edge of his/her seat and speechless. In between flashbacks, the viewer glimpses scenes leading to the murder proving Ford innocent. As the prime suspect, Ford is whisked away to the police station, where he is questioned. Left totally in the dark, Ford is arrested for his wife's murder. He is then tried, convicted, sentenced to death, and sent to prison. While in prison, Ford and a few other prisoners are transferred to another prison. Because of the confusion, the driver stops the bus, unknowingly on railroad tracks. During the attempted escape, one of the guards is wounded. Ford, being a doctor, instantly moves to his side trying to help him. Realizinghis hands arecuffed, Ford persuades another guard to give him the keys. Just as he uncuffs his hands, a train comes down the tracks. Ford barely escapes, jumping at the last minute. Instinct kicks in, and Ford begins to run, becoming a fugitive. Tommy Lee Jones ("Under Siege") comes into play, starringas a U.S. Marshall assigned to the escapee. Going to the scene of the collision, Jones issues a manhunt within a 90 mile radius. Meanwhile, Ford follows a river to a nearby town. If the viewer is at all aware of his or her surroundings, he/she will soon realize the river and nearby town are indeed Sylva and Tuckaseegee. During Spring semester of 1993, parts of "The Fugitive" were filmed in Sylva and surrounding areas. Carefully walking through the town, Ford comes to a hospital. He sneaks into "Harris Community Hospital," and tends to his wounds. Shedding his prison uniform, he borrows a surgeon's clothes, shaves his beard, and steals a patient's breakfast. On his way out, he steals a Jackson County Ambulance, and races down the Interstate towards Murphy. Meanwhile Jones catches wind of Ford's where-abouts, grabs a chopper, and runs through the underground drains leading to the dam. Finally, Ford comes to the end of the drain, which is situated about 100 feet in the air, overlooking the Hiwassee River. Jones catches up and orders him to stop. Insisting he did not murder his wife, Ford turns and jumps, leaving a stunned and open-mouthed Jones. Somehow, Ford survives, and swims to the riverbank.
