  • Emergency! SECT Students helping students The Western Carolina University Student Emergency Care Team consists of a small membership that provides vital emergency health care to students, faculty, staff and visitors. Serving the community and university since 1969, SECT provides 24-hour 7 day a week service in addition to stand-by duty at University events such as athletics, Mountain Heritage Day, Open House, and club and organization activities. Members of the team work on a completely voluntary basis receiving a free room in Moore building from the University in return for their services. The team is one of only six college Emergency Care Teams in the country and the only one in North Carolina. However the state is trying to get ambulance services at all state universities situated in a remote area like Cullowhee. The SECT works in cooperation with Graham Infirmary and the University department of Health Services. All the members are certified North Carolina Emergency Medical Technicians. Other services include back-up service to the Cullowhee Fire Department and giving "first responder" classes to RA's which show how to care for the patient before the team arrives. The team is presently looking for some good qualified people. Membership is not restricted to any major, but it is preferred that applicants are qualified Emergency Medical Technicians. Membership is very select. As the members must live together as well as work together, the applicant should be able to do his work and do it well. Applicants are tested on driving skills and on working knowledge of the ambulance equipment. After an oral examination on the practical application of his or her knowledge, the applicant will begin a training period of 5 to 10 weeks. Before full membership, the trainee will be observed to see if he or she is able to handle and complete calls with calm, confident, efficiency. Presently the team consists of three members: Glen Williams (Chief), Jim Wagstaff (Assistant Chief).'and Bryant Kinney (Equipment Officer); and three prospec- tives: Oliver Walker, Jarvis Adams, and Jay Schreiner. The team handles any thing from sprained ankles and car accidents to drug overdoses and heart problems. A call can last anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours. Members of the team are constantly on call, and are required to carry pagers, and must be within a one mile radius of the campus at all times. According to Williams, the team works hard and receives little gratification from the people it serves. In spite of a 45 percent increase in calls this year, the team has received maybe 3 thank-you letters. However SECT is more than willing to serve the university's needs and would like to be called upon. The team wants everyone to be aware that they should call the Infirmary (227-7430) with any medical problems. Requests for SECT are handled through the Infirmary. For more information, or if you are interested in joining the team, please call 227-4099 or 293-9944. The team encourages your involvement and appreciates your support. Football preview The students will get an early look at the 1980 WCU football team. August 21 at Whitmire Stadium with the annual Meet the Cats Njght.
