  • Page 4 Julyl5,1993 Western Carolinian The Firm: lawyer's dream or nightmare? Brett Ferguson Staff Writer Picture yourself as a young tax attorney, fresh out of law school and the number one draft pick for top law firms around the country. Surprisingly, a small firm offers you 20 percent more money than any larger firm, plus a lot of "perks." Sound too good to be true? It is. This is the situation that Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise) finds himself in The Firm. A Memphis tax firm, Bendini, Lambert, & Locke, makes Mitch an offer he can't refuse. From the start the firm takes an active part in Mitch and his wife's, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn) lives. Things go awry when two of the firm's attorneys are killed in an "accident" and Mitch is approached by the FBI. They offer him a deal; the only catch is that if he helps the Feds, Mitch must break the attorney/ client privilege and therefore be disbarred The Firm is more suspenseful and has more plot twists than any movie I have seen since No Way Out. It literally kept my attention riveted to the screen. The most praise should go to the casting director. Only a genius could cast such unlikely but incredibly believable actor /character combinations as: Tom Cruise as the non-macho protagonist; Gene Hackman as the reluctant villain; Wilford Brimley as the cold and unmerciful heavy; and Ed Harris as the FBI agent who wants a "bust". The casting is by far the best feature of this film, but also the acting is superb thro ugh- out the film. The film is based on the book of the same title by JohnGrisftam. Although the screenwriters can't fit all the detail of the book into a movie slightly over two hours, I must say that this film is the best adaptation of a book I have ever seen. The book is, without question, required reading, and if ever a movie could be considered required viewing, this is it. The Firm definitely deserves an A+. Godfrey exhibits "Frieze Metaphors" Robert Godfrey, head of the art department at WCU, has a display of several of his paintings in an exhibition entitled "Frieze metaphors" in WCU's Chelsea Gallery through August 5. In "Frieze Metaphors," Godfrey will strive to make the gallery an integral part of his exhibition. "It is an attempt to redefine Chelsea Gallery so that the viewer or spectator works their way through the entire space, similarly to the way that a Greek temple, for example, is experienced," he said "The eye scans, roves and is directed through the gallery space in a more comprehensive way than is the work was merely lined across the walls at eye level. In this way, the paintings reach beyond the decorativetobecomearchitectonicand unified within the space," he said.
