Also there are still a few of those 1/2 off bargains to be found. •ftp Varaity »ifap 1 r»ditk>nal Clothing for The Gentleman * His Lady Alma Mater Song Revised To Include Unive A revised version of the Western Carolina University Alma Mater song, originally written about 1922, has been approved by the university board of trustees. The revision was done by the original composer, Dr. W. E. Bird, a former president of the university. The original version was written when the institution was still Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School. Dr. Bird joined the faculty of the school in 1920, and, he recalls submitting the alma mater "about the second year I was in Cullowhee." Dr. H. T. Hunter, at that time president, accepted toe song "wholeheartedly," Dr. Bird has recalled, and thus the song became tie official school hymn. the appreciation of the administration, faculty, staff, students and trustees to Dr. Bird for his work. "I am confident all join me in expressing our thanks to Dr. Bird for this effort in support of our developing uni versity," Dr. Pow said. Dr. Bird, who holds the post of university historian, is the author of "The History of Western Carolina College: Progress of an Idea", published in 1963 by the University of North C aro- Una Press, and of two small volumes of poetry. Chorus Shout aloud with one long chorus, Voices clear and true, Lifted high in praise and honor, All for W. C. U„ ! Chorus Olympic Ski Team Forms For Racing Competition Dr. W.E. BIRD In the revision, Dr. Bird has brought toe song more in line with the recent history of toe institution, particularly with respect to the institution's elevation to university status The major change in the song came in toe line which formerly read "Hail to Cullowhee!" Tlie revved version of this line is "Ha', to W.C.U.!" Other revisions were made to correct the rhyme scheme. Dr. Alex S. Pow, Western Carolina president, expressed Western Carolina University's Olympic Ski Club, without the assistance of toe athletic department, has formed a ski racing team. This team will represent WCU in racing competition sopnsored by the Southeastern Intercollegiate Ski Competition Conference which invites all schools in the southeastern United States to participate. The racing team consists of ten potential racers, most of whom will return to Western next year, plus other skiers who show promise for the future. Practice for the upcoming racing events will begin the afternoon of February 6th. The management of Cataloochee has been very cooperative concerning these practice session, and the racers will be accommodated by toe lifts until 4:30 pm From 4:30 until dark or approximately 6:30, toe racers will walk up the mountain and race down in order to build stamina. The racing schedule begins TAU KAPPA EPSILON WINTER QUARTER PLEDGES Tau Kappa Epsilon's Winter Quarter pledge class is as follows: Row one; Dan Lacosta, Hugh Moffit, James Bryant, and George Meers. Row two; Gene Probst, C.J. Cody, Tony Oats, and Ric Casey. Row three; Curt Sell, Joe Rodgers, Peyton Harris, and Bob Bonoff. February 15th with a meet at Blowing Rock sponsored by toe athletic department of Appalachian State University. The Appalachian ski team is coached by a professor in the P.E. Department On February 21st, the athletic department of Leas- McRae College will sponsor the second ski meet at Beech Mountain. In addition, the Olympic Ski Club plans to invite ASU to participate in a dualistic ski race at Cataloochee on Feb. 28th. The purpose of this event is to offer more of WCU's interested students an opportunity to race. Students Wffl Hoar Taylor Spook Tonight Dr. Walter K. Taylor, a captain in the United States Army stationed at toe Epidemiology and Ecology Office, Fort De- trick, Maryland wiU be addressing biology students and faculty in The Blue Room of A. K. Hinds University Center at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 11. All other interested persons are welcome. Dr. Taylor's topic is "The Breeding Biology of the verdin, Auri- parus flaviceps." The verdin is a small, yellow-headed titmouse which ranges from Texas to California and southward. This bird is of interest partly because of toe large, globular nest it constructs. Dr. Taylor, a native of Kentucky, has his B. S. in Biology and History from Murray State University, his M. S. from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, and his Ph. D. from Arizona State University. He is a member of several professional and learned societies and the author of a number of papers on avian biology. WCU Graduate Students Organize The Association of Graduate Students was organized at WCU during fall quarter, 1968; and its constitution was written and officially adopted on Oct 30,1968. All full time graduate students, who number approximately fifty at present, are eligible for membership and are encouraged to join. The purpose of the organization is to unite all those en rolled in graduate school into one body in order to adequately serve their professional interests. By offering a variety of social events, the association also hopes to promote cordial relationships among graduate students. Dr. Maurice MorriU, Dr. R. M. Ainsley, and Dr. Gurney Chambers are faculty sponsors of the association. Its current officers are: president, Laurice Rheem III; vice president, Sylvia Morrill; and secretary—treasurer, Donna Ramsey. The Ski Club wiU meet Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in Stillwell 264. All interested persons are asked to attend.
