  • Volume 57 Number 8 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 9 Thursday, October 3. 1991 Lady Cats lose 15-8,15-9, and 15-7 against ASU Wednesday night Derek Smolik Sports Writer The Lady Catamount volleyball team hosted Appalacian State .University last night; and despite , starting out strong, they lost three straight games 15-8,15-9, and 15-7. The Cats started out the match strong, taking a 5-1 lead in the . first game. But then ASU outscored , the Cats 14-3 the rest of the game, including the last seven points. The story was pretty much the same in the last two games as well. Western took a 7-2 lead in the second game, then watched ASU score 13 of the last 15 points to take the game 15-9. In the third game the Cats tooka4-l lead, but the Mountaineers then rolled off 10 straight points and held on for a 15-7 score and third straight win. Coach Trish Howell was disappointed with the Lady Cat's ability to hold onto their early leads. "We showed that we could play with them (ASU) or even beat them, but didn't take advantage of it," Howell commented. Good performances for the Cats were turned in by senior Kristen Parker, who served well throughout, and sophomore Jennifer Ross who had several kills in the match. Throughout the match the Mountaineers showed why they are the defending conference champions. The Lady Catamounts dropped to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Lady Cats continue their four games home-stand tomorrow night against Marshall. Saturday the Cats play a double-header, first against Charleston Southern at 11 a.m. and then UNC-C at 4 p.m. Intramural Scene 1.
