  • Volume 56 Number 19 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 6 Thursday, February 21, 1991 Western set for big sports homestand Baseball set to open home season Tony Bolick Sports Editor Western Carolina's baseball team will be starting off the earliest home season in the history of the university when Radford visits the remodeled Childress Field this weekend. The Cats will be also trying to regain their winning ways after a miserable start to the 1991 season. Head coach Jack Leggett hopes the friendly confines of Childress Field will be kind. "We are excited about playing at home in the best baseball facility in the Southern Conference and one of the best in the South. It is a great place for our team to play and the fans will enjoy the new concession and rcstroom area as well as the scoreboard and other improvements," said Leggett. Radford will come to Cullowhee for a three game scries. On Saturday, the Highlanders and the Cats will square off for an afternoon doubleheader beginning at noon. The two will return on Sunday for the final game that will begin at 1 p.m. The Catamount baseball team has gotten off to a disappointing l-6startagainst nationally-ranked opponents. WCU opened the season losing three of four to the Auburn Tigers. The following weekend saw the Wolfpack of North Carolina State sweep the Cats in the three game Sunday-Monday series in Raleigh. The Pack took both games ofthcdoubleheader,8-3and 10-8. In the second game, NCSUgot eleven walks to get a 10-8 win. Six, of the batters walked during the game, crossed the plate for State runs. On Monday, the finale saw State win on a tenth inning run after Western scored two in the ninth to tie the game. "Losing three games at State was a big disappointment... We are swinging the bats well enough to win and our overall defense has been good," said Leggett. "Base on balls have plagued us and killed us in the second game at State." Second baseman Andy Dunn leads WCU at the plate raising his average to .478 with seven hits in twelve at bats at NCSU. Patrick Kcndrick's performance in Monday's heartbreaker was the highlight of the pitching staff. The junior righthander gave up three earned runs, struckout seven, and walked only two in eight innings. Basketball to end year in Ramsey Tony Bolick Sports Editor Catamount basketball heads into this weekend with one of the most crucial homestands of the past few seasons. The Cats are out of the hunt for a winning season but are entertaining the Furman Paladins on Saturday and The Citadel on Monday in hopes of a high conference finish. Wins over conference leader Furman and the Bulldogs, who are in the cellar of the conference could put Western in a position to go into the tournament in a tie for fifth in the conference. Help must come from the Keydets. VMI needs to lose both of its remaining games to assist WCU in the fifth place tie. Also at stake this weekend is the chance for the Cats to become the winningest team in the past five seasons in conference play and overall. Western currently stands at 3-9 in the Southern conference and 11-14 overall. A tie for fifth in the conference will be the best finish for the Cats since the 1985-86 team finished in a fifth place tie. Furman will enter the Ramsey Center on Saturday tied -OP/ rhoto oy Mark Haskell An early picture of the new stadium, Childress Field. The Cats will open their earliest home season in history Saturday. Public Restrooms and concessions are now available. CELEBRATE SPRING BREAK '91 IN FT. LAUDERDALE at MM66 on the beach FT. Western lost a heart- breaker in Boone to ASU, 91-90 after losing a 19 point lead in the second half. The Catamounts lost a huge lead in the final period Saturday. After hitting 21 of their first 23 free throws, WCU made only two of the last nine attempts. Terry Boyd led the Cats with 34 points with a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line. Boyd's 34 was the most by a Cat in seven years. The Catamounts then traveled to Johnson City Monday, to tackle the #13 East Tennessee Buccanneers and lost 102-78. ETSU hit 15 three-pointers in the win, their 24th. Western took a 9-0 lead early in the first half, but East Tennessee quickly rallied for a 10-9 lead and never looked back. The Cats made runs at the Bucs but they always had an answer and usually from behind the three point line. WCU was led by two 20- point performances. Terry Boyd scored 25, while Eric Dailey scored 21 and led Western with eight rebounds. The Citadel will come to Cullowhee on Monday, winless in the conference and with the suspension of Marshall from the tournament, locked in the number seven seed. The Bulldogs are 0-12 in conference play and have 5 wins to 20 loses overall. Western Carolina will be looking to sweep the Bulldogs and gain revenge on the Paladins, Saturday. Furman thumped the Cats in Greenville 88-73, three weeks ago. WCU beat The Citadel in their previous meeting in Charleston, 74- 72; the second shocking road win for the Cats in the 1990-91 season. Track Championships at ETSU Western Carolina University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete in the Southern Conference Championships this Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23, on the campus of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. WCU's men's squad is led by senior Marvin Allison, a Cullowhee High School product, who set a school record in the 35 pound weight throw at Clemson with a throw of 56' 5 1/4". Allison's performance was good for second place in the meet, and puts him first in the conference rankings. Allison also heaved the shot 50' 6" for a second place finish which ranks third best in the conference this winter. Mark Pressley and Shawn Miller placed first and second, respectively, in the high jump at Clemson, and they are the top-ranked high jumpers in the conference. Miller holds the edge over Pressley's 6'8 3/ 4" in the conference rankings by virtue of a 6' 11" WCU record breaking jump earlier this season at VMI. Also pacing the Cats is junior Kela Hunt, a returning all-conference sprinter. Freshmen Max Boswell and William Robinson each turned in season best performances in the 400 meters and 800 meters, respectively, this pst weekend. WCU's women's team has enjoyed nine school record breaking performances on the season to date. Susie Gardner, sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, trimmed five more secondsoff of her performance in the mile (5:05.51) to in the event at Clemson and place her second in the conference rankings. Junior Tega Crawford placed second at Clemson in the400 meters with a WCU record breaking performance of 1:00.18. Joy Davis will compete in five events (55 meters, 55 meter hurdles, long jump, 200 meters, and the mile relay) for the Cats, and ran a season best in the hurdles this past weekend. Von Ross and Gardner are two more workhorses for the women's squad, competing in four events each for the Cats. Ross is the conference leader in the long jump and the 55 meters, while Gardner is ranked second in the mile and the 800 meters. Both squads completed last year's seasons with fourth place finishes in the Southern Conference. £t. 66, Box 135B Cullow/hee, K1C 28?23 contact D«vi«{ or Ylancy Seders ?04?432?62 Arrowmont is offering e\ special horseback tr^il-riding L picnic event for experienced risers ARROWMO Franklin Sylva Cullowhee & WCU Turn «t Filbert Grocery Glenvllle .107 Lnke t>«te: Sat February 23 | Bring: Sack lunch, beverage provided | Where: Arrowmont, 10 miles from WCU !
