  • —Sports The Western r*rnllnlan Page Yl ■hured^^ggjeTn^e^^lGgg Biasucci Kicking Records Still Stand at WCU by Fred Mason The 80s have been very fortunate for the WCU Catamounts in the realm of football. A number of players have gone on to play professional football, on the defensive line, the offensive line, and specialty teams. Already we have two kickers making news in pro football. In this article we give honors to one in particular. Dean Biasucci played for the Catamounts during the years of 1980 to 1983. He was a place kicker, and proved to be one of the best in the Southern Conference. If you get a chance to view a Catamount football guide for this year, look through the History and Records section. For starters, in 1980, '81, and '83, Biasucci led the team in scoring. He is second only to Kirk Roach in career field goals, scoring 57 goals in his four years. He also holds the title of Most Kickoffs (78), Most Extra Points Attempts (41), Most Extra Points (40), but no Highest Extra Point Percentage. With a percentage of 97.5%, one would think that this ensures a career high; Biasucci is second only because the career holder is 100%! This record is held by Kirk Roach, who made 24 out of 24 attempts. Remember, though, Dean Biasucci made 40 out of 41 attempts. Biasucci also holds individual records for Most Field Goals in a Half (5), Most Points by Kicks in a Game (19), and Most Field Goals in a Game (5). He was named to the All- Southern Conference 1st Team twice, in 1982 and 1983. While reading through the 1989-90 football guide, you may notice that throughout the records of kicking, there are two names dominating the top spots. If Dean Biasucci did not have the career high, season high or game high, Kirk Roach possessed it. There has been a battle between the two to be Western's best kicker. In 1986, Biasucci held 11 records; in 1989 he still holds 9. Roach held 2 in 1986, but holds 21 records in 1989. It was only a matter of time before comparisons started being made. Thus, on Saturday, February 20th at E.J. Whitmire Stadium, both kickers mot for a kicking exhibition. Though the competition between the two was not serious, neither proved to be better than the other. For all intended purposes, we'll just call it a draw. Dean Biasucci has played the role of kickerfor the Indianapolis Colts since 1984. Since his pro career began, he has been named to the NFL All-Pro and the AFC Pro Bowl Team. He continues to perform as well as he did during his years with WCU, and to make us proud of this former Catamount. ++***••• LUCU Uolleyball Player Honored by Southern Conference Office of Public Information Photo Western Carolina University's Volleyball team junior co-captain Ragina Brown, from .King's Mountain, North Carolina, was named Southern Conference Player of the Week. She started the week off with 22 kills in a losing effort against UNC-Asheville. Later in the week, Brown led WCU with a career-high 41 kills in the lady Catamount's win over defending Southern Conference Champion Marshal. Brown's totals for the week include 63 kills, 7 blocks, and a 47 percent hitting percentage. Brown is the first Southern conference Player of the Week for the 1989 season. / Intramural Sports Offered on WCU Campus by Shawn Busby Swinging into action, the Western Carolina University Intramural Sports Program is currently offering softball, bowling, tennis and badminton competitions. The women's intramural program is divided into sorority and independent leagues. The independent league is broken down into a purple division and a gold division. Numbers are drawn at the onset of each season to determine which teams will participate in which category. The men's competition is scored on a point or non-point basis. Teams which choose the point system are placed into leagues such as the fraternity or international. Fraternity "B" teams are always placed in the international league. Teams in the point system are expected to field a squad for every intramural sport. The team with the most points at the end of the year wins their league championship. The program is divided into as many different leagues as are necessary. Squads in the non-point category are not required to participate in any certain events. Staff and faculty members must play in this classification. Although not in the ooint system, these teams have the r.amo opportunity to play for all-campus titles. Most team activities are contested in a round-robin tournament. The team with the best record represents their league in the playoffs. Single elimination tournaments are used for individual contests. Each person competes until they lose one game or match. The tournament continues until there is a champion. Intramural team activities includa tag football, softball, basketball, swimming, track, and soccer. Individuals can participate in tennis, water polo, tabli tennis, horseshoes, and badminton. The Western Carolina Intramural Sports Piogram is a division of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department. The main objective of the program is to provide ample opportunity for all students, faculty, and staff to participate in wholasome recreational activity. Promoting sportsmanship, leadership, and fellowship is also a primary concern. Current intramural news is publicized through the Western Carolinian newspaper and the WWCU radio station. Also, intramural handbooks and annual wall calenders have been developed to keep students informed. A display case, located in the lobby of Reid Gym, contains pictures of intramural teams, campus champions, and intramural assistants. Nearly 4,000 Catamounts, male and female, participated in some type of intramural activity in the fall of 1988. This number is expected to increase throughout the 1989-90 academic year. Currently there are 78 softball teams signed up for the fall season. This is significantly mor< than in the previous season. In creased interest demonstrates the quality of the intramural program as well as the importance students anc (acuity place on these activities. This positive use of leisure time is being utilized by the admissions office. Prospective students an being informed of the large number o team and individual activities in sir attempt to stress the quality of th< intramural program. Intramural programs are of fered on a yearly basis. A wide variety of activities have been included ir order to satisfy most athletic interests Although there are exceptions, mos WCU students, graduate students faculty, and staff are eligible to com pete in intramural activities.
