Dr. David Dorondo, history professor, is responsible for arranging Gresmann's visit via correspondence Consultant General of the Federal Republic of Germany. Gresmann, who has had extensive experience as the political editor of the German weekly newspaper Sued- westfunk, and who has served as a correspondent in both German radio and television, will speak on the 40th Anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), to be celebrated April 4. According to Dorondo, recent years have brought a great deal of discussion about the relative roles the U.S. should play in NATO compared to those Europe should play. "Because of the difference of opinion which sometimes arises, there are strains within the NATO Alliance between Europe and Washington," said Dorondo. ' "Gresmann will speak of these differences, but also of the very real strengths which exist in NATO between the Federal Republic of Germany and the U.S." Dorondo has arranged for Gresmann to address his History 416 class as well as give a university-wide lecture entitled "Troubled, but Successful—40 years North Atlantic Alliance/German Aspects," Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Natural Science Auditorium. "By addressing the 40th Anniversary of the NATO Alliance from the German perspective, Mr. Gresmann will help us better understand what German concerns are and what the Federal Republic of Germany thinks is important in German-American relations and in European-American relations," said Dorondo. by Christine Faris NEWS EDITOR Don't forget that March 15 is the deadline to apply for a 1989 Coors Veterans' Memorial Scholarship. Student Conservation Association Offers Positions For Students by Jennifer Donnelly STAFF WRITER This summer and fall, the Student Conservation Association (SCA), will be offering over 1,000 conservation and resource management volunteer positions for high school students, college students, and older adults. According to SCA, it is a non-profit, educational organization founded in 1957 to encourage young people to actively participate in the management of wilderness areas and natural resources. Those selected will spend 3-12 weeks devoting themselves to the protection and management of over 200- National Park Service, U.S. Forest-Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other federal and state resource agencies across America. SCA operates two different programs: Recourse Assistant Program for men and women over the age of 18, and the High School Work Group Program for students between the ages of 16 and 18. SCA is currently accepting applications for this year's positions. Opportunities are available in Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park, Arizona's Fonto National Forest, Maine's Acadia National Park, and many other areas throughout the U.S. Volunteers receive a grant for round-trip transportation to their designated program area and a weekly stipend to offset living expenses. The hosting agency provides free housing. Although there are no final deadlines, applications will be accepted only as long as positions are available. Those received by these dates increase the chance of an applicant being accepted for a position; March 1 for positions beginning May- July and June 1 for positions beginning August-September. According to SCA, positions arc filled on a competitive basis. Although some positions require only enthusiasm and interest in conservation work, women require specific academic background or previous field experience. For more information, contact the Student Conservation Association, P.O. Box 550, Charlestown, NH, 03603, (603) 626-5206.
