The Western Carolinian 4 ff^dayTJanuary 29, 19B7 Guys In Tutus?! Gotta See This One Folks « > ^x» Y Is Western North Carolina ready for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the guys m* Photo in tutus? Well, these guys will be appearing on Thursday, January 29, when "Trocs" takes the stage In the Regional Activity Center. Curtain time Is 8 p.m. From m« Office of Public Information OPI - Is Western North Carolina ready for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carolo, the guys in tutus? The answer will be made clear Thursday, Jan. 29, when the "Trocs" take the stage in Western Carolina University's Ramsey Regional ActMty Center. Curtain time is 8 p.m. The company was founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form. It first performed in late-late shows and off-off Broadway lofts. Reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice established the Tracks, as they are known, as an artistic and popular success. The company of professional male dancers performs the full range of ballet and modern repertoire, including classical and original works in faithful renditions of style and manners. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggeration the foibles, accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance. Their program at Western begins with Act 11 of Tchaikosvsky's Swan with Act II of Tchaikosvsky's "Swan Lake," the signature work of Les Ballets Trockadero, in which the beautiful Princess Odette is turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer a nd is nearly saved by the love of Prince Siegfried. After an intermission, the Tracks will perform "Spring Waters" by Rachmaninoff, "The Lamentations of Jane Eyre" by Prokofiev and "Pas De Quatre" by Pugni. "The Dying Swan" and "Yes, Virginia, Another Piano Ballet" will conclude the WCU performance after a second intermission. The Tracks' roster lists such improbable dancers as Adam Baum, Tatiana Youbetyabootskaya, "Biff" Stroganoff and Felina Goudolova in "Swan Lake"; Nina Enimen- imynimova and Klaus Youssoup- ovtu in "Spring Waters"; Sveltlana Leftova in "The Lamentations of Jane Eyre; Karina Grudi in the sole ballet "The Dying Swan"; and Igor Teupieze and Margaret Lowin- Octeyn in "Yes, Virginia, Another Piano Ballet/' The fact that men take all the parts, heavy bodies delicately balancing on toe asswans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, and angst-ridden Victorian ladies, enchances rather than mocks the spirit of dance as an art form and delights and amuses the most knowledgeable as well as the novices in the audience, reviewers have said. As the Los Angeles Times, Louisville Times, Toronto Star, The Wall Street Journal and other publications have said — the Tracks are very funny. The WCU performance is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series and made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and WCU employees, and $3 for WCU students and children (4-18). Tickets are available through the Ramsey Center Ticket Office.
