Dirty Dozen Geis, from page 1 o bad is a matter of debate, but the bottom line is this: sports has created an indelible tie between its participants and its fans, and I'm one of its fans; to me, Len Bias was a friend, and Dick Howser is a friend. My conclusion is that any illusions that sports has created or any of its bad qualities notwithstanding, being tied emotionally to a man thousands of miles away and whom I've never met before is pretty damn human - - and pretty damn wonderful in the overall sense of what our lives on this planet are all about. Such is the meaning of life, and for helping me to know that, to the world of sports I am thankful. ETSU, from page 10 conference game and a second loss would probably erase league championship hopes for either team. The Catamounts are 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the conference, while the Buccaneers are 2-2 and 1-1. Waters thinks his team will have no trouble bouncing back mentally for this week's game despite the Catamounts' worst loss since he took over the program in 1969. East Tennessee pulled one of the biggest upsets in recent Southern Conference history last weekend Thp Buccaneers stunned Furman, the nation's No. 3 ranked division l-AA team, by a 25-13 score and snapped the Paladins nine-game win streak inside the Southern Conference. ETSU used a stubborn, opportunistic defense and a ball control, field postion offense to pull off the shocking upset. The Buccaneers held Furman's conference leading offense to only 176 yards, some 200 yards less than the Paladins average, and caused five turnovers. to pg 1 2 THOUSANDSof ITEMS rTT PRICES EFFECTIVE THRU SAT., OCT. 11 AT MP IN WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO UMTT QUANTITIES.
