  • PAGE 6 Counselor's Corner: The Facts About Herpes By Trish McCoy The word "herpes" tends to scare many people. For some it means cancer, for others it means something close to leporasy, and for still others it means the end of sexual contact. But for the over 2 million Americans that suffer from the disease, herpes doesn't have to mean any of these things. Though it can be uncomfortable at times and may mean using caution in sexual contact, herpes does not have to be, the end of the world. Herpes is an infection caused by one of two viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 is often called oral herpes because it usually appears on the face, mouth, and lips. HSV-2 is referred to as genital herpes because it tends to occur below the waist on the thighs, genitals, and buttocks. However, either virus can live at either site; where an infection occurs depends on where the virus originally entered the body. The mouth and genitalsarethemostcommon sites because it's easier for the virus to enter the body through mucous membranes than through thicker skin. The primary attack is often the most severe because the body has not yet built up antibodies against the infection. For most people, the first sign of an attack is sensitivity, soreness, or itchiness in the infected area. Usually within hours, reddish marks may appear on the skin, which will soon develop into fluid-filled sores. These blisters will eventually break, then gradually heal over with new skin. A primary attack can last up to three weeks, and during the initial stages is often accompanied by flu-like symptoms of fever, muscle aches, and swollen lymph glands. After the primary attack, some people never have another outbreak. For those who do have recurring episodes of herpes, the outbreaks are often brought on by stress and tend not to be as severe or as long as the primary attack. During an outbreak, it is important to keep the infected area clean and dry, and to wash your hands if you have touched the sores, to prevent the spread of the infection. It is also necessary to maintain a balanced diet and to get adequate rest. Good health aids the body's natural defenses in fighting the disease. Herpes is almost always contracted through sexual contact with an active carrier. This means that the carrier must have virus particles present on his or her skin's surface, and this is presumed to be whenever and as long as sores are present during an attack. For the virus to spread, skin-to-skin contact, usually accompanied by some friction, is necessary. It is rare that herpes is contracted through contact with an inanimate object such as a toilet seat or a towel. Though studies are somewhat inconclusive, in general the herpes virus cannot survive long outside the human body. A doctor can diagnose herpes by observing the symptoms and by taking samples of cells from an active sore. Though there is no cure for herpes, research is continuing to find drugs to help combat the disease. One of the newest drugs, acyclovir, is available by prescription as an ointment to apply directly to the sores, as an injection, and in an oral form. Taken at the onset of a primary outbreak or a recurrence, it can usually lessen the duration of an attack, though it will not prevent a recurrence. It may, however, decrease the possibility or frequency of a recurrence. ., _ Coping with herpes is sometimes the most difficult part of having the virus. Often there is anger resentment, guilt, anxiety, and frustration about having contracted the disease. How can one person deal with all these emotions? One way is to find out the facts about herpes. It is also helpful to discuss these feelings with someone who will listen and understand. The Counseling Centercan help in both of these areas. A HEALTHY WAY TO EATING OUT fa * fT by Kim Poor You remember the Senario: You've been on a diet and have done well. You are slowly losing unwanted pounds and suddenly someone says those dreaded wordsLETS EAT OUT! You don't have to panic. You can eat a healthy meal out and stay on your diet. When you know in advance you are going to be eating in a restaurant, it is easier to plan your food intakeforthatday. Eatregular meals at breakfast and lunch with an idea in mind of what foods you expect to have at the restaurant. Once at the restaurant your knees are shaking—you don't know if you can control yourself. Look at those plates passing you by-lasagna, chocolate cake, pizza! Just remember you are in charge. Some tips to remember when ordering in a restaurant include: 1. If ordering a salad you will not be preparing for yourself, ask for dressing on the side, oil and vinegar or no dressing at all. Same rule applies if you order a dish with gravy—ask for it on the side! 2. If contemplating fish or chicken, remember some restaurants broil and serve fish in butter. Ask the waiter for plain broiled fish with the butter on the side. This way you can control your amounts. 3. If fast food is your choice- no problem. When ordering a sandwich most fast food restaurants are glad to prepare to order. Ask for a burger with only mustard, lettuce and tomato-eat only half of the bun. This slight inconvenience will helptocutback on calories and fat. 4. Avoid french fries, fried chicken and milkshakes-these are high in calories, fat, and salt. 5. A way to get the maximum amount of nutrients from a fast food meal is to ask for orange juice to drink. You've passed by soft drinks, and given your body a healthy dose of vitamin C. Even better ask, for milk-low fat orskim. 6. If you decide to try a baked potato, limit the amount of sour cream and butter you top it with. One tablespoon of butter plus one tablespoon of sourcream adds approximately 150 extra calories to your potato. Potato plus sour cream and butter (or margarine) equal 265 calories or more! 7. If you get a steak, make sure to trim off any visible fat. This gets rid of many calories. 8. One tip, which is virtually unspoken, is to avoid sweets and desserts. 9. If your roommate is dying for pizza, don't be left out. Experts agree that pizza is a healthy food. Made with bread dough, a tomato sauce, cheese, and a meat topping, pizza covers all basic food groups. Make the meal even more healthy by ordering whole wheat crust. Yes, you can eat pizza—just don't eat the whole thing! You can reduce quantity and still enjoy pizza. Some restaurants will even make a light pizza—easy on the cheese with little or no meat-try it. By these helpful hints and facts it iseasytoseethateatingout can be a healthy experience. The best way to deal with restaurants is to plan ahead, decide what you are going to order and stick to it when you get there. By making sensible choices you can avoid those impulses that undoall the progress you have made. Bon Apetite!
