Western Carolinian/January 17, 1985 NCAA Sports Catamounts on a Roll The Catamount basketball squad has regained a large measure of its composure after some disappointing holiday losses, and with three straight wins has vaulted into the midst of the tangled Southern Conference league title chase. Western began its resurgence last Saturday night in Cullowhee with a 66-61 victory over the Furman Paladins. Spotlight Walker and Clifford Waddy led the Cats to a 30-27 halftime advantage with 10 points apiece. Walker and Waddy finished with 14 and 10 points respectively. Andre Gault shot for 11 points, 9 of which came in the second half. He also pulled down seven of his game-high , eleven rebounds in the second stanza. Quinton Lytle scored 10 points before fouling out with 1:29 to go in the contest. The Catamounts' second conference win came Monday night in Johnson City, Tennessee as a controlled, patient offense, fantastic shooting, and a stellar performance by Lytle paved the way to a 21 point winning margin. The Cats shot a season- best 63% from the floor, including an almost unheard of 78% in the second half. "We desperately needed those wins to give us a boost for the upcoming road trip," said Western Coach Steve Cottrell. "If we continue to shoot like that, we can play with a lot of people," he added. "Good shooting on a young team is contagious...if one player begins to shoot well, the others seem to pick it up." It remains to be seen if Quinton Lytle's lead will be followed, but his 29 point performance against the Buccaneers was quite an example for any who might take the hint. Other Catamount standouts during Western's latest of conference victories were Clifford Waddy, who gunned for 14 points, Richard Rogers, Ced Cokely, and Spotlight Walker who scored 10 each, and big men Chris Tipton and Roy Young who snatched 4 caroms each. Wednesday night the Cats played host to Division I independent Campbell University before a strangely subdued Reid Gym crowd of 2,416. Western took control of the game early and never glanced to the rear, roaring to an 84-63 win. A balanced scoring attack was four Cats break into double figures with three others coming close. Quinton Lytle once again led the way with 15 points. .Clifford Waddy followed with 12 and Rogers and Walker each added 11. The Catamounts outrebounded the Camels with authority, holding a 43-26 edge at the game's end. Such rebounds prowess may be in jeopardy for this weekends' conference road trip, however, as two of the Cats' premiere newcomers, 6'9" Center Andre Gault and 6'6" Forward Leroy Gasque suffered injuries in the win over Campbell. Gasque was thrown to the floor as he attempted a dunk at the 13:13 mark of the first half. He suffered a cut over his right eye which by Billy Graham Sports Writer reauired seven stitches, and a bruised hip and elbow. Both he and Gault, who stretched knee ligaments while rebounding early in the second half, are listed as questionable for Saturday's game cgainst an improved VM1 squad. The Cats will return home to seek their 20th straight win in Reid Gymnasium when they host Augusta College next Wednesday. Augusta made their own season during the holidays by upsetting Western at Augusta. The Cats will look to extract a large measure of revenge during the rematch. A footnote on a subject which will be discussed at length next week: Catamount basketball coaches and players as well as teams which have played in the Cat Cage before will be quick to acknowledge the effect of a fired-up Western Carolina crowd. Coach Cottrell's program has long been geared torward the students, and year after year the students have responded, making life miserable for visiting teams. As evidence I offer the current winning streak. Don't let the tradition die! If a mere snowstorm can border on causing a riot, a flying tomahawk and a rim-wrecker of two should bring down the house! Freshman Cats Andre Gault and Leroy Gasque can attest to the aches and pains of a cold winter's night. The gash over Gasque's eye required seven stitches, while Gault suffered stretched knee ligaments. Both are questionable for the Cats upcoming road trip. COMING SOON Cooper, Greene Drafted by USFL Two of Western Carolina University's football standouts,. defensive end Louis Cooper and defensive back Tiger Greene, were the fruits of the 1985 draft of the United States Football League. Copper was picked first in the sixth round by the Orlando Renegades while Greene was a fourteenth round selection for the Memphis Showboats. Greene, as a matter of fact, was a fourth round draft choice by Memphis last year but decided to take advantage of a fifth season opportunity at WCU. Both Cooper and Greene helped lead the attack for a successful 8-3 campaign for the Cats. Cooper, for example, led the team in tackles with 89. The 6-3,238 pound senior from Marion, South Carolina, also set a school record for quarterback sacks in a single season with 12 and also tied the career record of 28. Cooper created problems in opposing backfields as he recorded 20 tackles for 118 yards in losses. He caused two fumbles and recovered a total of three. Cooper's efforts were recently rewarded with first team All-America spots by the Associated Press and the American Football Association. He was additionally a selection for the All- Southern Conference team and was the conference's defensive player of the week. Greene, statistically speaking, has been deemed the most outstanding defensive back in WCU's 51-year football history. The 6-0, 187 pound senior from East Flat Rock, North Carolina, led the Southern Conference this season with six interceptions. Greene picked off 12 passes over the past two seasons and 16 in three seasons. As a defensive back, he blocked three kicks this season which boosted his career total to seven. He also had 82 tackles and 14 pass break-ups. Greene was also recently honored as a second team All-America selection by the Associated Press. Additionally, he was a member of the All-Southern Conference team and a two-time conference defensive player of the week. Cooper and Greene were joined by five other Southern Conference players in the draft. Bob Standifer, a defensive tackle from Tennessee-Chattanooga, was selected in the first round of the draft by Oakland. Charles Fox, a wide receiver from Furman, went to New Jersey in the sixth round. Center Jay Wilson of Appalachian State was picked up in the ninth round by the Tampa Bay Bandits. Furman running back, Dennis Williams, went in the tenth to the Memphis Showboats. And, linebacker Phil Forney from East Tennessee State was claimed by Jacksonville in the eleventh round.
