Last week we did not go to press due to Fall Break The previous week most of the sports got cut for various and sundry reasons. I rish Howell continues to lead in the Western Carolinian f-ootball Forecasts. Our la>>t set of predictions was not printed but the outcomes were much better. Mike C reason, 1 rish Howell and 1 finished with an 8- 2 record. Billy Graham and Ste\e While finished 7-3 records and Jim Rowell ended up 6-4 (Sorry, Jim.) Billy Graham was thc only o pick N C Slate's upset over Gerogia lech 1 predicted Fast rennessee's victory ovet I r-ChattanooBJ I he conference is really balanced Vv look last week oil and have resumed this week with our predictions Ihe WCU tootball team had returned to the NCAA IAA poll belore being defeated bv 1 he Citadel So we are back out of the I op I went). and we have two conlerence losses Don't count the Cats out ol the Southern Conference race I he conlerence is very balanced, more balanced than it has been in previous years. Anybody can beat anybody with the exception ot Davidson WCT still faces Furman, Marshall, and Fast tennesee and by defeating these three teams. WO would be in a good position to win the conference. So don't give up yet! WCU will lace Woflord this Saturdav at 2:00 and could use voui support as they try to get back on the right track. Ihe WCT kiekint! specialists are having superb seasons Sophomore punter Steve Kornegay continues to lead the conference in punting and is currently tanked fourth nationally. Freshman placekieker Kirk Roach is well on his way to rewriting WCU's held goal records. The rookie from Doraville. Georgia, has connected on 11 of 15 field goal attempts this season and is leading the Southern Conference in 3-pointers and is ranked No. 3 in all of I —AA football. He has already passed Dean Biasucci's freshman season record for field goals (10) and eclipsed the school record for distance with a 53 yarder in I he Citadel game. He also leads the Southern Conference in scoring with 44 points. In Addition to his field goal marks. Roach is a perfect 11 of 11 on kick conversions and better than 70'; of his kickoffs have reached the end /one. Jeff Gilbert continues to put his name into the WCU record books. His 30 completions in the Citadel game was a new record and his 38 yards is a personal best. He now ranks 4th in career passing yardage. Eric Rasheed moved into second place on WCU's all-time pass reception list with his 10 catches lor 166 yards in the Citadel game. WCU's defense set a record in the Citadel game when they tackled the Bulldogs behind the line of scrimmage 14 times for 57 yards in losses. Louis Cooper leads the team in tackles for losses with 12. I asi Thursday, WCU's Phil Roberts placed second in the North Carolina Men's Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. Roberts finished 16 seconds behind Wake Forest's Mike Palmer. Robert Baker placed ninth. For their effort, Roberts and Baker were named to the all-state cross country team. Can von believe it? Basketball practice has begun. In the intra- squad scrimmage on Monday evening, thirteen players participated. That is five more players than what the Cats had in the latter part of last season. Speaking of basketball, pre-season basketball magazines are out. Street and Smith has picked the Cats to win the conference. Marshall. UT Chattanooga, and Appalachian follow. Quinton Lytle was also chosen as the pre-season conference player of the year. I would like to thank Billy Graham for the fine job he is doing on the sports here at the Carolinian. Western Carolina University's football team will attempt to regroup this week against Wofford College's Terriers in preparation for a final run at an elusive Southern Conference championship. This Saturday afternoon's (2:00 p.m.) encounter with Wofford in Whitmire Stadium will be the last non-conference game of the season as the Catamounts will t—AA top r title hopes into a closing stretch against three other championship contenders - Furman, Marshall and East Tennessee State - on successive weekends. Western can win the championship with a sweep of its remaining games coupled with losses by UT—Chattanooga. The Citadel and VMI. The Catamounts were riding high last week as they had bounced back from a disappointing conference loss to UT-Chattanooga early in the season with three straight victories and had climbed back into the NCAA's l-AA top 20. Last Saturday's stunning 34-33 loss to The Citadel dealt a severe blow to Western's chances for a first-ever league championship and a return to the I- AA playoff where the Catamounts were so successful last season. Wofford will come into Whitmire Stadium Saturday with a disappointing 1-4 record and has lost its last six meeting with the Catamounts. However, the Terriers have always managed to score a lot of points against WCU and led twice in last season's game before losing by a 37-20 score. What does Waters think of playing a non-conference game coming off the loss to The Citadel? "We have got to get back on the track before we can get back in the conference race and this game will give an opportunity to see if we can improve on last Saturday's game, bounce back physically and mentally, and get ready to make another run." he stated. "Believe it or not. we are still in the race," said Waters of his Catamounts, now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference play. "We have to play three of the teams that currently have only one conference loss and I've got a feeling that the conference champion is going to have two losses. That means that we have to win the rest of our games and hope for a little luck, which is something we haven't had much of lately." The Catamounts, playing before a homecoming day crowd of 10,775, rolled up 385 yards of offense behind the running of tailback Melvin Dorsey (117 yards) and the passing of quarterback JeffGilbert (14 of 21 for 183 yards, 2 TDs). Dean Biasucci was a perfect 3 of 3 on field goals. Wofford had 208 yards rushing behind the running of Arthur Lindsay (54 yards). Craign Bossard (55 yards) and Tim May (53 yards). The Terriers Don Hairston kicked a pair of field goals. INJURIES: Western Carolina lists one injury from The Citadel game. Mover Bernard Jones suffered a sprained ankle and is listed as questionable for the Wofford game. Offensive guard Tim Hill (ankle) injured in the Appalachian State game is also questionable for the Wofford game. Reserve defensive tackle Jim Woods (knee) is listed as doubtful and reserve safety Scott McAdams (neck) will not see action.
