Western Carolinian/October 18, 1984 News AH Day Seminar for Victims of Violence The number of reported cases of sexual abuse among children, adults and elderly people has increased in recent years. prompting professionals to seek more training in the appropriate treatment of these individuals. An all-day seminar on "Emergency Care of the Abused Sexually Assaulted Person" will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Haywood County Library auditorium. The seminar is sponsored by Western Carolina Universitv's School of Nursing and Health Sciences continuing education program. Region 11 Emergency Department Nurses Association and Mountain Area Health Education Center. Ihe program is d).v\& ] -u provide emergency nurses and other emergency care personnel with practical information about the special needs ol abused and sexually assaulted patients. "The emergency personnel are frequently the first people who interact with the abused oi sexuallj assaulted person. |iov\ thev handle that situation from a physical as well as an emotinal standpoint can determine w hethei the person recovers successullv from the incident," said Rebecca Dennis, director ol the continuing education program ol WCl s School ol Nursing and Health Sciences. I he seminal will be based on legal obligations and cover identification ol abuse and special emotional needs. Brooks Carolina University's 1984 alumni to a prominent community leader HI, a Haywood County native awards Saturday went to a top- and supporter of the university. who now lives in Palmsdale, Calif., received the Distinguished Phi Mu Every year Phi Mu fraternity visits the Eliada Home as a social service project as well as to share some fellowship with those who are less fortunate. The Phi Mu's took over 15 children on a hayride through the country roads of Asheville and then stopped for a picnic where they ate popcorn and cookies. The childrens'eyes were filled with joy when the Phi Mu's arrived with the truck and they Visits Eliada immediately hugged them and remained close by the rest of the day. The Phi Mu's enjoyed the trip very much according to Trudi Ferguson, a sister of Phi Mu. "We felt like big sisters to all the children and enjoyed having the opportunity to take care of them for one afternoon," said Ferguson. The children were all under 12 years of age and most of them had either been abused or were from poor families who could not support them. The Phi Mu's were very excited to see these less fortunate childrens' eyes light up with joy and happiness. The Phi Mu's are planning a Halloween costume party at the Eliada Home for the children in October and are looking forward to spending more time with the children. Brooks, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brooks of Canton, is a 1966 WCU graduate and a 16- year veteran of the Air Force. He is deputy director ot the Air Force flight Test Center's F-15 Combined Test Force at Edwards Air Force Base in California. I he- unit is charged with all flight testing on the F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft. America's top-rated air superiority lighter. Brooks has flown more than 50 different aircraft and logged 4.(MX) hours in lighter' aircraft. Brooks was selected to flight test the F-15E on high angle-of- attack, a condition during which a fighter aircraft's performance is highly unpredictable. The tests were considered extremely high risk with a possibility the aircraft control could not be recovered and the aircraft lost. The successful test program resulted in the prestigious Kincheloe Trophy, awarded by the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, for the test center in 1983. Brooks was chosen to be director of the F-15/Anti-Satellite Combined Test Force. He is responsible for all flight testing on the free world's only anti-satellite weapon system, a part of the United States' "Star Wars" strategy. Brooks flew three combat tours in Vietnam in F-100 and A- 7D fighter aircraft and nearly 200 combat missions. He earned numerous flying decorations including the Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. At WCU, Brooks earned a bachlor of science degree in chemistry. He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity and a starting defensive back on the Catamount football team. He is a 1962 graduate of Canton High School. He is married to the former Catherine Jayne Baer fo Signal Mountain, Tenn. They have two sons, Billy, 7, and Bobby, 6. Moody is president and general manager of P.E. Moody Funeral Home Inc. which operates Moody Funeral Home and Fairview Memorial Gardens in Sylva and Bill Moody Funeral Home and Swain Memorial Park in Bryson City. He is the provider of Jackson County Emergency Medical Service and president of Moody's inc., an landholding corporation. In addition to a heavy professional and civic schedule, Moody has found time for extensive involvement with his alma mater. He is a member of the board of the WCU Development Foundation, a charter member of the Patrons of Quality, a former chairman of the annual fund, a former university trustee, and a member and past director of the Western Carolina University Alumni Association and Big Cat Club. Moody's service to WCU has included manmy behind-the assessing the victims; legal obligations; differentiating among assault and battery, abuse. sexual assault and rape; emotional needs and how social myths affect the care professionals give; local and regional resources such as departments ol social set vices and patient advocacv groups; and established procedures for emergency care ol victims. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
