  • Bits & Pieces It's another conference SHOWDOWN this Saturday in Whitmire Stadium as Western puts it all on the line against league-leading UT- CHATTANOOGA. If you thought the FURMAN game was a big one, this one is even BIGGER because the MOCS arc undefeated in the conference and ranked 17TH in the NCAA DIV. 1-AA POLL. With a WIN Saturday, the Cats would move into first place in the conference, and stand a good chance at winning their first conference crown. THIS IS IT FOLKS!!! Let's all back the Cats this Saturday and boost another WIN. The Cats have not lost in their last 5 outings, and a WIN this week will bring NATIONAL attention to our team . . . THE CATS looked impressive in the gloomy HOMECOMING GAME last week, but you could tell they were still a little down after tying FURMAN. The team has really cut down on its mistakes the last few outings, and has committed only five turnovers in the last four games . . . . . .The CatDEFENSE has been credited with 14 quarterback SACKS in the last four games, and MARK BUFFAMOYER, STEVE MARSHALL, TIGER GREENE, CLYDE SIMMONS, LOUIS COOPER, BERNARD JONES, and JOHN SURRAT continue to pace their efforts. DEFENSE will be the name of the game this Saturday, so guys, GO FOR GOLD! . . . . . . KickerDEANBIASUCCI-S51-yardfteld goal against Wofford tied the WCU record for DISTANCE. Ironically, it is HE that originally established the record two years ago against the same team. The senior specialist now has 45 field goals to his credit and is only two points shy of tying the Southern Conference record for career points. He enters this week's game with 220 points, and the conference record is 222 held by Carlester Crumpler, a running back at East Carolina (1971- 73). . . .Split EndKRISTY KISER has a string of 66 pass receptions without a touchdown. His last TD reception was in his sophomore season in 1984 . . . . . .Haven't the CROWDS been great at the game this year! We're averaging 11,245 FANS per game in Whitmire Stadium this year, and that's an INCREASE of 2,851 over last season's first three home games. That makes me PROUD to be a CATAMOUNT! Tailback LEONARD WILLIAMS' touchdown against WOFFORD tied him with GERALD HARP for fourth on WCU's career touchdown list. Each has 28 touchdowns, but look for Williams to increase that this week . . . ... I first thought it was a JOKE, but it's TRUE! The real RONALD McDONALD will be at Saturday's game along with "Hamburgler" and "Grimace." The McDonaldland stars will be in the stadium beginning at 11 a.m., and will be handing out lots of great McDonald goodies to the fans. Come on out and meet my idol - RONALD McDONALD! Yes, he's really coming to Cullowhee! . . . My CONGRATULATIONS to KAY YOUNGBLOOD and all the lovely girls on this year's 1983 HOMECOMING COURT. Every girl represented her organi/ation superbly, and each added excitement to the many festivities going on last week . . . . The WCU CHEERLEADERS were especially proud of the homecoming court last week. Two of their members - Captain VICKI FULBRIGHT and BETSY JONES were on the court, and both of these ladies changed out of their dresses to cheer after halftime. You looked great girls! . . . .Former WCU cheerleader LU ANN CANIPE is back at Western now, seeking another degree. Lu Ann is doing a great job helping me at WWCU on the sports staff, and says she really enjoyed the homecoming game. She was on the homecoming court in 1981, so she knew why the girls were so excited at halftime. Lu Ann, work on your racquetball game though, will you? . . . . . .Our WCU SOCCER TEAM concludes its long 1983 season tomorrow with its final home game against UT-CHATTANOOGA. The last match for the team is Sunday at UTC. Good luck, team, in these last two outings . . . Our LADY CAT VOLLEYBALL TEAM is UNDEFEATED in conference play after recent wins at APPALACHIAN and UT-Chattanooga. The team is now 20-8 overall, and stand their best chance ever of winning the conference championship this year! Keep up the great play, ladies! . . . Coach STEVE COTTRELL reminds students that almost all of the WCU BASKETBALL practice sessions arc OPEN to spectators, so stop by the gym one afternoon and watch the Cats practice. Western Opens its 1983 basketball season NOV. 28 at HOME against MILLIGAN . . . . . DON'T MISS this week's CATAMONT TAILGATE SHOW on WWCU-FM. The show starts at 10 a.m. this Saturday, and will feature interviews with players, coaches, cheerleaders, and more, so follow all the action up to the I p.m. kickoff . . . Baker, Roberts Pace Cross Country TQjk u/c&rtitN CABOciMi/WJ... Mark Newsome Sportswriter Unknown to most people, the Catamount cross country season is drawing to a dose, with less than two weeks lett. With lootball grabbing most ofthe headlines, the success of this year's Cat-1 rackers has perhaps been taking the back seat I he cross country team, coached by Dan Kinnney, started olt the season by winning the Western Carolina Invitational meet and placing second at the Georgia State Invitational. The 1983 squad has relied heavil) on the services of Robert Baker, a sophomore product of North Irdell, and Phil Roberts, a junior transfer, from High Point College. Baker and Roberts have amassed an impressive record by finishing in the top five in five meets this year, last week at the state meet held in Raleigh. Baker and Roberts finished 10th ami 15th. respectively, out of 131 runners and led the Catamounts to a Nth-place finish out of 16 teams. The Baker and Roberts tandem both earned all-state status on the lulls N.C. State course. The conference meet will be held in Boone. However. the Rifle Cats will get its season underway this coming Saturday (Oct. 29) in a Western Carolinas Rifle Conference event at Wofford College. Western's crosscountry team was scheduled to run in the UNC Charlotte- Invitational but did not participate. The Cats have- no meets scheduled foi iIncoming week, but they will be busy. The Southern Conference championships, to be held Nov. 5 in Huntington, WV, will be the- next action forthe team, and the Cats will begetting read) for those league championships. Lady Cats Roll Over ASU, UT-C Western's women's volleyball team passed two important regular season tests this past week with road wins at Appalachian State- (Wednesday) and UT- Chattanooga (Monday). In the Oct. 19 match at Appalachian State, Western Struggled and faced a defeat as they fell behind 2-1 in games. Ihe I ady Cats won the first game 15-9, but ASU came back to win 15-12 and 15-5. Western came back, however, to win 15-5 and 15-13 to claim the match and the second win over ASU this season. Monday night at UT-Chattanooga. the ladv Cats again had to go live games to win. Western won the first game 15-8. but UT-C won 16-14. WCU won the third game 15-7. but UT-C tied the match with a 15-13 win. I lie lady Cats won the match with a 15-10 win and made the team 20-8 overall and 5-0 in all matches against Southern Conference foes. This Thursday night the Lady Cats host Clemson (7 pm Reid Gym) and will have home matches Nov. I (Tuesday) against UNC-Asheville and Wednesday, Nov. 2, against UT-C. Both matches will begin at 7 pm in Reid Gym. Leggett Encouraged From Page 10 The Cats have tour expereinced pitchers back in Ken Hare, Scott Gay, Andy Griffin, and Peter Wasik. Leggett feels that the pitching will be stronger this season which will definitely be a plus. "We will not be as powerful as last year when we had Mel Kinsey, David Hill, and Greg Johnson. Our pitching and defense will be a key to our success next season," he explained. Handling the catching duties could be veteran Reggie McCraw, who has not had extensive experience behind the- plate but is a proven hitter. He is being challenged by recruits Darryl Rogers and Tony Meyers. Offensively. Western has several players with solid bats. McCraw, Fonville, Pust, and Tebo are proven sticks. Freddie Hailey. Jeff Parham. Brent Sadler, Jackie Slaughter, Floyd Hinton, David Hyatt, Jimmy Elderidge. Jeff Grande, Alfred Turner, and Mike Dunlap are newcomers making impressive pre-season showings and all have potential to help the Cats. "We have better depth than last season and will be fundamentally sound. We have a lot of good athletes and are laying a good foundation for a good spring. I think from the looks of things wc will be in every ball game," said Leggett. Western will play another highly competitive schedule with the likes of Clemson, Wake Forest, N.C. State. Tennessee. Georgia, and South Carolina. Leggett hopes with a good showing against outside competition and good conference play, his team will have the possibility of post season NCAA tournament play. The Southern Conference will have a new look next spring as the league will be split into two divisions. WCU will play in the Southern division with Davidson, Furman, and defending conference champion. The Citadel. The North division will be composed of Marshall, VMI, East Tennessee State and ASU. The top two teams in each division will play a double elimination tournament during the last weekend in April to decide the NCAA tournament representative.
