  • Page 8 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, October 24,1968 Students To Be On Policy Making Committees News Briefs WCU students have been given voting memberships on virtually aU policy-making committees of the University. The action, announced by Dr. Alex S. Pow, president, had received the approval of the faculty senate and the board of trustees. The steps to place students on the standing committees— heretofore regarded as "faculty committees"—were initiated by Pow at the time he assumed the presidency last July. Student leaders were Informed then of the proposal, and Charles Sutton, president of the student body, was invited to offer recommendations. Extension of membership to the broad range of standing committees, and enlargement of student representation on committees of which students already were members, are designed "to increase the appropriate, responsible student involvement in the university affairs,'.' Pow said. Announcement of the addition of students to the committees was greeted by this comment from Student Body President Sutton: "I am very pleased with the action. I appreciate Dr. Pow's and the Faculty Senate's faith in the ability of the students. We are looking forward to working on these committees." Until this recommendation passed, student membership on standing committees was limited to student-oriented committees, involving such areas as homecoming activities, stu- detn entertainment programs, student appropriations and a few others. As a result of the decision to expand this representation to other areas, students will have, for the first time In the history of the university, voting membership on these committees: Acedemic affairs, athletics, audio-visual, awards and contracts, business, civil defense, conferences, fraternities and sororities, grounds, health, hospitality, housing, and food services, orientation, planning and development, public relations and publicity, university publications, readmissions, research, student activities, student aids and awards, and traffic and safety. In 1967, students received membership on the standing committee on the library. They also have members on such other committees as standards, student affairs, student-faculty judiciary, and spring festival. In the last Instance, the revisions announced today provide for the students to hold a majority on the festival committee, and for the committee to choose a student as chairman. Students previously were members of the traffic and safety committee, but without voting privileges. Vandalism Case Is Settled A settlement has been reached in the cases of four male WCU students involved in the October 6th vandalizing of the unfinished women's dorm. The Dlckerson Construction Company Issued a warrant for the students. They appeared in front of the Slyva magistrate Saturday, October 12th. The case had to go to court first to indicate what type of settlement was to be reached. "Q & B Night Riders" was sprayed in white paint on the dorm wall late Sunday night, October 6th.
