"Touchstone" To Play In Hoey Touchstone, a Chapel Hill band that- plays traditional and contemporary Irish music, will perform in concert Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium at Western Carolina University. The concert, sponsored by the University Players of WCU's department of speech and theatre arts, will include a performance by Tan Davidson, singer, songwriter and multi-talented musician from Murphy who is a visiting artist at Southwestern Technical College. Touchstone, a four-member band which has toured extensively in the United States and played in Canada, "creates a new musical style that is firmly grounded in Irish tradition, yet is infused with a healthy dose of American country and old-time music," according to the cover of its new album. "The New Land." The band grew around Triona Ni Dhomhnaill, who was born into a musical family from the Donegal Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) and inherited a large repertoire of songs, many in Irish, from her family. She was a founding member, lead singer and keyboard player with the Bothy Band. Other members of Touchstone are Zan Mcl.eod, a native of North Carolina who formerly played and toured with Mike Cross and who plays the guitar, bou/ouki and mandocello; Mark Roberts, who plays the penny whistle and flute; and Claudine Fangille, who sings and plays the madolin and banjo. Tickets for the concert are $3 in advance and $4 at the door. They may be purchased in advance from noon until 4 p.m. weekdays in the speech and theatre arts department office, Room 122, Hoey Auditorium, beginning Feb. 28. February 28, when CHS broadcasts the final episode of "M*A*S*H"as a twoand a half hour IV movie. This last episode will detail the end of the Korean War, and the preparations of the 4077's personnel to go home. For those of you who will be able to watch it, the presentation will no doubt prove to be- very worth seeing. As many ol you may know, "M*A*S*H" premiered in 1972 and, during its II-season run, it has dealt with various issues of war, society, and humanity. The series has proven to be enormously popular with millions of viewers, most of whom will no doubt mourn at the program's demise. Ihe filming of the final episode is said to have been a very emotional experience for the cast and crew, many of whom shed quite a lew tears. The final episode supposedly opens just a lew days before peace is declared. Ilawkeye (Alan Alda) is rumored to be confined to a mental ward, having.suite ted a breakdown because of some unknown horror, and is being treated by psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Alan Arbus). Meanwhile, the personnel at the 4077 react to the news of the war's approaching end, even though there is still fierce lighting going on. Due to a foul-up. B.J. (Mike Farrell) has received his orders to go home early. Although Colonel Potter (Harry Morgan) knows n to be a mistake, he lets B.J. leave Some time later. Hawkeve, having recovered Irom his breakdown, returns to the 4077 only to learn that his friend B.J. has already left. And as the lighting continues during the last moments of the war, the wounded continue to pour into the hospital. Expecting a replacement for the departed B.J., the M*A*S*H personnel are surprised when B.J. himself an ives-on his was home he was ordered to go back to the 4077. So B.J. resumes helping his friends handle the inflow of casualties from the last hours of the war. Soon however, a ceasefire is declared, and everyone begins celebrating and discussing their plans lor the future. Ihe ending, according to *M*A*S*H" producers, will be somewhat bittersweet and poignant, but also touching and memorable to all fans of the show. It will definitely be an event worth experiencing. One final word, for those of you who will feel a bit of remorse at the passing of the show, there are strong rumors of a spin-off series following the characters of Colonel Potter, Corporal Klinger, and Father Mulcahy, coping with life in a stateside hospital alter the war. The series is being planned to debut on CHS this fall.
