  • Western Carolinian/February 17,1983 9 "...And Your Sons And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy..." by Brian Devinney And it shall come to passafterward. that l will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; and old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will l pour out my Spirit. Joel 2:28-29( K.J. V.) And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, l will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh : and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit: Acts 2:17-I8a (K..I.V'.) Whether you believe in the Bible or not, there is one fact coming out that may be related to these verses, I his is that church attendence is up. This is true not only for the older section of the populace but also for the college age. 17-24 years old, section. Some churches in Cullowhee, for example, which have heavy student attendence have noted increases from 15 to 20 percent. Several local church leaders were asked why they thought this increase was taking place. Brother Al Behm, of the Catholic Student Center, said that he believed that it was of an increase in spirituality, and that people art- wanting more meaning in life. Brother Al also noted that the Center's class on lay ministry has also seen a slight increase in attendence. Rev. I indsey of the Cullowhee United Methodist Church attributed the increase in church attendence to the uncertainty of the times we are living in, and that students today are more serious-minded than they were in the seventies. Rev, Hornsby echoed what Rev 1 indsev said concerning uncertain times by saying that our government leaders seem unable to cope with world and domestic problems. He continued that people arc hungry for something which is real. Rev. Woody of the Cullowhee Covenant Fellowship Church stated that he believes that in going to church, people are finding meaning to life and a reason for li\ ing, Although churches do seem to be increasing in attendance, cults on the other hand seem to be losing a little bit of their momentum. The cults, however, are still strong on larger campuses and in larger cities. It is pointed out by Dwayne Rausch of Inteivarsity. a non- denominational student religious group, that false prophets and teachers, such as the cult leaders, were prophesied in 11 Peter 2:1, 3 and 7. Ihe connection with cults seems obvious. When asked what need the cults seem to be filling. Rev. Woody said that he sees them filling the emotional vacuum in the heart of the people. He also stated that the cults are possibly evidence of demonic activity which is predicted in 1 Corinthians. Rev. Hornsby said that he believes the reason for the success of cults is due to the school systems not relating to God as being real, and that the increase in high technology has made us more rationalistic. Brother Al brought What is probably the main reason why cults succeed when he said that they fill the need for love and acceptance that is especially strong between high school and college. Students look to religion in uncertain times. (Photo by Mark Haskett) Changing Words In A Changing World by Carole Hudgens Man's vocabulary is as complex as his mind and changes even more. Words come into being and then evaporate as if they never existed. Then again there are those words whose meanings have changed over the years. Some slang terms have been used so often that rhey have become accepted as proper English. Words are often created due to new discoveries and developments. For instance, the word "sandwich" was created when the Earl of Sandwich did not have time to. eat dinner. His solution to the problem was to put some meat between two pieces of bread. This new delicacy was named after Sandwich, thus coining a now common word. Other words are coined from certain characteristics. Daytime dramas on the radio were'often sponsored by soap manufacturers; therefore, they were named soap operas. Other words start out with one meaning and end up Critic's Corner The Woodland This week I dined at the Woodland Restaurant. If I was a country lad, I would have felt right at home. Being a city boy, however, I can only envy those who were raised on pintos, mashed potatoes, and fried catfish. I chose to enjoy the Woodland's "all you can eat" buffet. Everything 1 tried was very good. The salads were fresh and crisp, and Hazel's homemade veggies were a treat. I especially liked the candied yams. The fried catfish and meatloaf were country style and very tasty as well. And the corn muffins..."pea pickin'good"is the best country expression I know, but no expression can possibly do those muffins justice. The Woodland, located on Highway 441, is indeed a "down on the farm" eatery, and a good one. Give Hazel a try. Till next week...bon apetit y'all. meaning just the opposite. A good example of this is the word "gay." Ihe original definition of "gay" is mirthful excitement, bright or lively. Today the word should be used with caution because the meaning has come to denote homosexuality. Another term whose meaning has been changing is the word "bad."The proper meaning of bad is inferior, poor or misbehaving; however, many people today use this word to express just the opposite of its original meaning. The changing times are often the blame for new word meanings. Some words which used to be insults are now compliments and vice versa. An example of this is "chauvinism" which used to primarily mean patriotism. Today it is defined as an attitude of superiority towards members of the opposite sex. In this ever-changing world, man will continue to adopt and eliminate words from his vocabulary. New words will appear with technological advancements and social trends, and each generation will make their contribution to the language of man. Nightly Specials: Tues. & Thurs. Call us for your party needs Dinners or Parties for 5 to 200 Know The Law Due to license restrictions and revocations and the nearly automatic increase in insurance rates alter conviction, it has become almost an economic necessity for people to engage counsel and defend charges of drunken driving to the best of their ability. APPROACH Start with the basic elements of the offense. In general, the statutes are worded something like this: "lt is unlawful for any automobile or other motor vehicle upon a public highway." The primary elements are: l) Driving, 2)1)pon a public highway, 3) Under the influence of alcohol. Ihe prosecution will have to prove all elements of the offense. 1. Driving Many times the arresting officers did not see the suspect driving the automobile. This is usually the case after an accident when the officers arrive at the scene finding numerous people gathered around one or more damaged automobiles. The driver is located by the officers and is determined to be the driver and owner of the vehicle'. Upon examination, the driver is determined to be intoxicated, or under the influence of alcohol. The suspect readily admits to being the operator of the vehicle. Frequently, the officers do not attempt to, or are unable to locate any witness who saw the suspect driving the automobile. The corpus delicti must be proved by evidence independent from the extrajudicial statements of the defendant, lit other words, the driving cannot be proved by an admission of the defendant that he was the driver. II. Upon a Public Highway In most states it is necessary that the prosecution prove that the offense occurred upon a public highway. Very frequently defendants are arrested and charged with drunken driving when they were on a parking lot or in an alley approaching a public highway. Numerous alleys are not public, although some of them are. III. Under the Influence of Alcohol This clement has two primary categories: Those cases in which a scientific breath or blood analysis is ivolved, and those in which no scientific evidence is involved. The majority of nonscientific evidence will be circumstantial. Keep in mind that the Brown Bagging Reservations testimony of the officer that, in his opinion, the defendant was drunk or intoxicated is rncrely opinion testimony and not direct evidence of the guilt of the defendant. A major defense used to dispute the prosecutor's case is that of physical disabilities that might explain a drunken state. Those eases in which a breath or blood sample is used, and after chemical analysis, if the blood alcohol content was in excess of . 10, the person is usually charged with a DU1. The two common defenses to this argument are time defense and malfunction of the machine, or inexpertness of the operator. If the blood-alcohol test is postponed for a period of 30-40 minutes after arrest, alcohol has time to enter the bloodstream and thus account for a higher reading on the test. It is often easier to build a defense against breath or blood tests than other types of evidence. A lawyer can do very little to help a defendant when charged with driving under the influence if he is never contacted. There are many defenses against DUl's. lt would be beneficial to consult with a lawyer before going to court and entering a guilty plea. i "L ILaVST MINUTE Mi Friday night skiing ■n ************************* .Catalochee :* * * ************************* Students $10.00 non students $15.00 Offer good through LMP only For more information contact the LMP office University Center /lRTQIRVED V.CLASS RINGS.INC Now's the time to think about your college ring.
