©Copley News Service you still say no, and that abortion is okay, then your mind is made up; no amount of reason,debate,oranything can change your mind. Unwanted children? In a recent study by Dr. Edward Lenoski, professor of pediatrics at U.S.C., it was shown that 91% of 674 battered children he studied were planned pregnancies and 90% were legitimate. In addition, child abuse has risen 400% since the abortion law was passed in 1973, even though America has aborted 8,000,000 "unwanted children". Why? It was said that it has ignited a lack of love for children in general. The plain fact is, abortion is the ultimate in child abuse. There are plenty of families who would love to have these "unwanted children". Birthright is an organization in the Cullowhee-Sylva area that can help with alternatives. They are not a political lobbying group, and they are not coercive in their dealings with clients about abortion. (However, if a client wants an abortion then she will have to go elsewhere). Birthright helps with alternatives to abortion; in addition to counseling, they help with adoption services, pregnancy tests, and they do their best to meet physical needs (a place to stay, clothing, food, etc.). 1 sincerely hope that some readers will see that abortion is murder, or at least see that those who believe it to be murder are not just trying to enforce their morals on others, since murder is not something that anyone can remain neutral on. Please realize that nqoneshould have the right to choose for themselves about anything if their choice hurts innocent people... Sincerely, Craig A. Cortez First of all I must commend you for speaking your mind. The Carolinian is a sounding board, and you used it in this sense. However, there are some points I would like to make that you may not have realized. First of all, many people believe in the separation of the church and state. The elections of many officials are being manipulated by religious groups (such as Moral Majority). This, in the eyes of many people, myself included, is nothing but certain special interest groups influencing our elected officials to vote, not necessarily for the good of the people, but in the interest of the organizations that put them there. I agree with you that murder, child beating, etc., are crimes. However, a lot of people don't realize extenuating circumstances in many cases that would call for an abortion. A senator recently stated he opposed abortion even in cases of rape. Forcing a woman to bear the child of her attacker is one of the most heinous crimes immaginable. One of the great truths of Christianity is mercy. Organized religion of late has shown very little. Attention! All students receiving Financial Aid MUST sign a voucher to get the aid credited to their account. Student Aid - Cutting back on education (in the form of research grant cutbacks and student aid ) is one of the most self-defeating moves ever taken by the government. Technology and the demand for new knowledge has created a political and economic race which we cannot afford to lose. Already American businesses are suffering because of foreign competetion. The main factors in this loss of trade are lack of innovation on the part of American companies and technological breakthroughs increasing production and quality made by other countries. The fate of the American auto industry is still looking grim because it failed to recognize the demand for smaller, more fuel efficient cars too late. There are many fields of study that benefit the nation as a whole that do not seem to be related to anything important. But when you look at all the scientific advances brought on as a by-product of the space age, one can see the importance of science to the well-being of a nation. And one of the first places to start degenerating is by cutting student aid and research grants. Energy - New developments in solar, wind, and renewable energy resources are being forsaken in favor of increased development of such non-renewable resources as gas, coal, oil, and timber. It is high time for the government to realize that once these sources of energy are gone, they will be gone for good. There is no time like the present to begin to form a comprehensive energy policy that will develop alternative energy sources to carry us through for 200 years instead of 20. Pollution Control/Job Safety - The Secretary of the Interior and a misguided congress have joined together to wreck years of work on pollution control with the stroke of a pen. Remember the years of never-ending legislation it took to curb pollution by big industry? In essence, big business is once again unleashed to make their own, which are dictated by bottom-line profit. As everyone knows pollution control is costly. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what will happen. But not to be all critical, Mr. Reagan and his congress have many supporters and have accomplished some points of merit. However, points such as the ones mentioned above have to be considered because they do present a viable argument that seems to have been missed by our men in Washington.
