Sports 12 Ladies Looking Strong The WCU lady basketball team is experiencing the same sweet taste that the boys are tasting, that is-victory. Under the direction of first-year coach Judy Stroud, the Lady Cats came through a very tough schedule of four games last week to obtain three hard-earned victories, two of which were at home. In their first Division 1 game against Belmont-Abbey last Monday, the ladies came away with their first impressive home court win, handing Belmont a 87-60 loss in front of more than 1,000 excited supporters. "It was a good advancement for us," said head coach Stroud while commenting on the win. "It showed our home fans that we are planning to win this season, and gave some good examples of why," she continued. Perhaps two of those examples came with the play of Serena Suratt and Judy Green, who were both devastating in the endeavor. On offense, Surratt paced the Lady Cats with 17 points, scoring 10 of those in the first half, while gaining 5 assists and 2 steals. Defensively, Judy Green stood out with 4 steals, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds; quite an impressive show in her first home performance. With this win behind them, the Lady Cats then traveled to Boiling Springs, NC, last Wednesday to take on a scrappy Lady Bulldog team there. Despite a poor defensive performance, the Lady Cats managed to maintain a consistent offensive attack, to hand the Lady Dog's a close 87-80 Division 1 win. "We were just lousy defensively," said Stroud in reference to the close performance. "However, thanks to the offensive explosion of Sharon Wilson, we were able to stay in the game." Indeed, Wilson was explosive. She paced all scorers with 26 points, (the most Lady Cat individual points this season) 5 steals, and 10 rebounds from her post position. The win improved the ladies' record to 2-1 overall. Perhaps the lady Cats' toughest game and most decisive victory came last Friday over the 1979 National Champion South Carolina State team in front of over 1,000 screaming Cullowhee fans. The game was close throughout, but at the sound of the buzzer, it was WCU who walked away with the victor, handing the SC State ladies an impressive 74-66 defeat. "This by far, was our most impressive victory last week," said Stroud with an obvious grin on her face." SC State was big, agressive, and extremely quick. Beating them meant making big plays, matching their aggressiveness, and halting their speed." And the Lady Cats did just that. Behind the leadership of Anna Wike, a 5'7 sophomore; Cindi Saltz, a 5'7 senior; (the only senior on the 12-member team) and Judy Green, a 5'4 sophomore, the ladies managed to out-score their opponents in the first quarter in impressive style. In fact, Wike scored six of her total 8 points in the last six minutes, while Green hit 12 of her 14 total in the second half also to spark the win. Stalz was a key in aiding the ladies' play in the first half, hitting 16 of her total 17 before halftime. After this impressive win, it was apparent in the next game against Lenoir Rhyne that the Lady Cats were tired. They had won three straight only to let the ladies from Hickory scoot by with a 70-64 win. "We really were not up to par after such a tiring week of play," said Stroud of the loss. "Playing four games in one week is just too much on any team." Despite the loss. Western did see some good efforts by Teresa Braswell and Judy Green. Braswell paced the lady cats with 18 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Green was impressive on defense with 8 assists and the prevention of sevral fast breaks. This week, the ladies played UNC-Asheville and will play Pembroke State tomorrow night (Friday) at 7 p.m. Both should be tough opponents. Nonetheless, some bright spots have been seen in the Women's basketball probram which has gained more than a new coach for this season. by Russ Randolph Wanna Swim? Have you ever swam competitively?
