  • Letters Western Carolinian/December 10, 1981 Cheerleaders Okay Dear Editor, We are also former WCU Cheerleaders who were present at the 1981-82 Basketball Cheerleading tryouts. We saw much potential within the new squad and were not at all disappointed with the results. It seems to us that last weeks letter has missed the whole purpose of cheerleaders. Sure, elaborate stunts and gymnastics are impressive (as are taught at the "Universal Cheerleading Association" camps) and we believe they are important to cheerleading, but what good arc they it that's the only reason you cheer? Our rewards from cheerleading were not being recognized on campus as a cheerleader, but getting to know fine people like Coach Bob Waters, his staff, and his players; and actually caring whether they win or lose! After all, to us, the purpose of cheerleading is to support the team and encourage fans to do the same. This includes pre-game, game, and most importantly, post- game behavior. Our advice to the new squad is to cheer hard, but take time to get into the game and get to know the coaches and team. Good luck to you all, we know you'll have a successful season. LuAnn Canipe and Janelle Spirnock PS: To the "fans" who wore bags to the UT-C game, we don't blame you-if we were associated with your "group" we'd wear bags, too!!! YEE! Aid Searchers Beware Dear Editor, There was an article in the last issue of the Carolinian about a scholarship search company. The Financial Aid Office has no information specifically about this particular company and wants to caution students to be informed consumers before investing their money. There are several companies in the business of finding the name of scholarships for which one may be eligible- some reputable companies, some not. With money to attend school becoming less available, there will be more companies going into the business. A call to the Better Business Bureau may be quite revealing. You may also ask for names and addresses of other customers whom you may contact. These companies guaranteed a list of a minimum number of scholarships for which you may be eligible but offer no IN CULLOWHEE FOREST HILLS MOTOR LODGE Twenty units, telephones, TV, Restaurant. A question needing to be asked is, "Are there any on the list which the student would not have gotten through normal channels— from catalogs available in public libraries or from a high school or college advisor'" The cost ol the service varies widely. Some companies charge $35 or $45 for a minimum of live names. The Financial Aid Office has even seen one guaranteeing twenty names at a cost of $120! The College Board, a reputable company, ran into such complaints from customers when it offered the service years ago. It has since abandoned the service. Their charge was$!6.50. This may be a valuable service or it may be a fraud. Let the buyer beware Sincerely, Wm. Glenn Hardest). Director, Student Financial Aid Judgement Questioned Dear Editor, As students and supporters of the Western Carolinian, we feel that we are getting more than our money's worth from our staff. We emphasize "our,"as the students help sponsor this publication. However, we question the judgement of our staff in one particular area. We feel that the Western Carolinian has ample opportunity to express its opinions and those of its staff without having to answer "letters to the editor." It is a sad reflection of our paper that the staff must present such an attitude toward the student body. It's like having the Western Carolinian say, "If we can't play by our rules, we won't play at all." The "letters to the editor" section is just that, not a Dear Abby column and requires no response. Give us, the students, credit for being somewhat intelligent. Put the issues before us and let us make up our own minds. You have the opportunity to present your views every week on more than twenty pages. Give the students an opportunity to express their opinions on a single page without having to childishly "get the last word in." The following interested students, Bradley W. It seems that a Christmas tree was stolen from the University grounds. This may seem like another senseless act of vandalism but events following the clipping of the tree have made me rather angry. It seems that campus security immediately rushed to the fraternity houses to try to find Cotton's missing tree. Early Wednesday morning a brother at my house answered the door and was greeted by two security officers wanting to know if our fraternity was responsible for ruining Cotton's Christmas. It is getting to the point where any time the rules get broken here in the beautiful Cullowhee, the fraternities on this campus get blamed. 1 will be the first to admit that we raise hell, party, enjoy ourselves, etc. Many times INDIVIDUALS in every fraternity commit acts that make the Greek system as a whole look bad. This is bound to happen. 1 am, however, sick and tired of the administration taking it for granted that every time an unfortunate incident occurs, fraternities get the blame. There are, if 1 am not mistaken, other students on this campus besides we Greeks. It seems to me that since fraternities on this campus are all capable of paying for a Christmas tree we have no need to get one through to page 16 Now Open 7 ajn. -11 pm The Gold Mine ft**************************-****** :Pinball Pool Video Foosbali: ****#********^***#*************** Also Check Our Self Serve Gasoline Prices Regular $1.279 No Lead $1.359 Hi Octane No Lead $1.389 Directly across from New Post Office
