They are Dennis Eugene Funderburke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Woodrow Funderburke Jr. of Route 9, Hickory, and Kimberly Coggins Poteet, wife of Michael Poteet of Route 3, Sylva, and daughter of Harley T. Coggins of Cullowhee and the late Maxine Coggins. Funderburke, a senior, and Mrs. Poteet, a junior, are the first WCU students to receive and share the $1,500 scholarship established this year in the university's Development Foundation by the North Carolina Sheriff's Association. Both recipients are dean's list students and serve on the dean's advisory board for the School of Technology and Applied Science. They were selected by a committee within the School on the basis of academic excellence, professional attitude and leadership potential. The award criteria require that eah recipient is a full- time student majoring in the criminal justice degree program and a resident of North Carolina. Preference is given to the son or daughter of any law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty, with second preference to the son or daughter of any sheriff or deputy deceased, retired or active in law enforcement. Third preference goes to a criminal justice major who is a state resident. None of this year's applicants included students whose parents are or have been involved in law enforcement, said Charles Taylor, director of WCU's criminal justice program. In the future, the annual scholarship of $ 1,500 will be awarded to one or two WCU students for use in the following academic year. Forward Your Mail Pat Rogers, Mail Supervisor for residence hall mail delivery, says, "While you are gone for the Christmas holidays, your mail continues to arrive in Cullowhee daily. This not only poses a problem for the Housing Mail Room while you are gone, it also hinders effective mail delivery when you return. To help alleviate this problem, students should do the following: 1. Those who are returning for spring '82 semester should stop their newspaper service from December 19 through January 18. The volume of newspapers received over this 30-day period causes many problems for our mail personnel. 2. Students who are not returning for spring semester should have their newspaper subscriptions cancelled and should inform magazine publishers of their new address. Also, make certain you have left a mail forward card with the Housing Mail Room. Forms for informing friends and neighbors of your new address are available at the U.S. Post Office. Following these few suggestions will greatly improve your mail service in the spring. It will also benefit the Housing Mail Room markedly."
