  • Thursday, May 11, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Cats collide with Newberry in playoffs Barring rain with a touch of "if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise," Western Carolina's Catamounts should be playing In (he NAM District 6 PUyoffs .1 Green wood, South Carolina today. Slated to begin their first playoff game at noon today, the Catamounts were to Pice top-seeded Newberry. Western was expected to start veteran righthander Don Bright on the mound in the initial encounter of the double-elimination playoffs. Bright leads ihe district pitchers with a 0.91 earned run average despite the fact nis Mrd -V. He ranked 18th in the latest NA! ratings, better than any nth district pitcher. Last year, Bright had not lc a game until the playoffs, he has hopes that this season. will be a turnaround. Western's offense rests on two hard hitting infielders at present. Freshman second xi; ■man Dale Fox is leading the Cats from the plate with a sizzling .346., He also has set a WCU record for the most singles Li a season w; t 25 to dal j. The oid record w.is held by Tommy Hayos ai 24. Fox is joined by shortstop •Jim Grove in shouldering the Catamount hitting. Grove is currently leading the team with 25 RBl's , the second best total in the district. Newberry, who was eliminated early last year, is in the favorite role this season by virtue of their 11-1 district mark. Western and Newberry have not met this season. The Indians are expected to start righthander John Brown, who has a 7-1 season record, against the Cats. The other likely candidate to face Western today is lefthander Jimmy Conrad who had a 5-2 record. At the plate, Newberry is led by All-American Johnny- Harbin who hit over ,400 last season in route to the honors. This year Harbin is off his 1971 pace but still has a strong ,320 batting average. Harbin had two of Newberry s three hits in the entire tour- Uon Bright Halo Fox ney last season— both were homers. Currently outhitting Harbin is the Indiam's second baseman Al Lewis. Lewis has been molesting the ball at a .385 clip and has 18 RBI's. The winner of today's game will face the winner of the South Carolina State-Erskine game at 5 p.m. in the second round tomorrow. The two losers will also meet in a prior game Friday at 2 p0m0 with one being eliminated. The undefeated team will then automatically advance to the championship game to be played at 5 p.m. Saturday, The two once-defeated teams will face each other at 8 p.m. Friday for the right to play the undefeated team in that championship game.
