  • Newsbriefs continued... Grants fun/workbook. Multicultural Media Associates of Thousand Oaks, Calif., will produce films on the Vietnamese boat people and their culture. The Council for Exceptional Children at Reston, Va., will develop teaching materials to help educable mentally retarded children learn about their own cultural heritage as well as that of their classmates. The Ethnic Heritage Studies Program awards are made under the provisions of Part E, Title IX, of the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965. LEEP Grant Western Carolina University has received a $4,500 Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue tuition payments for law enforcement personnel currently enrolled in WCU's criminal justice degree program. The grant, announced through Rep. Lamar Gudger's office in Washington, D.C., will pay this year's tuition for about 10 law enforcement personnel who have previously received LEEP tuition support. Madrigal Dinner As has been the custom since 1970 WCU will usher in the holiday season with its annual Madrigal Christmas Dinner, to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3. ' Tickets for the festive dinner, which features costumed lords and ladies, madrigal singers and other entertainments in the Elizabethan styje, will go on sale at Hinds University Center Wednesday, Nov. 12. Tickets will be on sale from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily. On the evening of the Madrigal -Dinner, the Grandroom of the university center is transformed into the great hall of an English manor, circa 1600, and old Christmas customs such as the boar's head procession are observed. Doors to the great hall open at 6 p.m. and diners are asked to be seated by 6:30. The menu will include roast beef, baked potato, glazed carrots, English peas with pearl onions, Waldorf salad, bread, tea or coffee, plum pudding and wassail. Cost of the dinner, including entertainment, is $9 for adults and $6 for children under 12 years of age. Western students may purchase tickets for $6. Ticket reservations may be made by calling 227-7205. All tickets must be picked up within 48 hours of reservation. New Eh. Course A new course, "American Playwrights and Film," will be offered next semester by the department of English. The course will focus on modern American dramas that have been transformed into important films. O'Neill's A Long Days Journey Into Night, Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes, and Tennessee Williams' Streetcar Named Desire will be among the works studied.
