  • Editorials November 12, 1981 Page 3 Viewpoint From July 1, 1980, to June 30,1981, public revenues from North Carolina ABC Boards totalled $265,372,513.82. For the town of Sylva, Gross Sales amounted to $1,176,381.40. Of this amount, $11,174.19 went to Education and Research, $141,034 went to other municipal organizations, and $7,422 went to law enforcement in the area. By comparison, Mecklenburg County had Gross Sales of $27,170,177 (highest in the state) while the town of Boiling Spring Lakes had sales of $37,250 (the lowest). Before taking these massive figures out of context, however, it should be noted that the Net Income from these sales totalled only $8,078,397. This figure is easily overshadowed by the $23 million contributed to municipal organizations, the $2.7 million contributed to law enforcement, and the 2.1 million allotted for Education & Research. Between alcohol sales and tobacco sales, it is amazing to consider the amount of revenue generated. I am not condemning or condoning the fact that so many dollars flow so freely through these industries. Sometimes, however, it must be noted that drinking and/or smoking in excess can cause problems. I'm sure many people on this campus have seen the after-effects that alcohol and smoking can cause. If you're having problems because you're drinking or smoking too much, you should mark the date November 19 on your calendar. The Great American Smokeout and the Great Escape both take place on this date. A sizable portion of the Carolinian staff, long guilty of chainsmoking, is going to give a try at the Smokeout next week. If you thing you have a problem, then you probably do. Even if you're just interested, these are both good causes worth checking into... ...Concerning coverage of SGA events in last week's paper, some of the information came out slanted against SGA President Gary Long. For those of you who are still wondering what is going on in the firing of VP assistant Paul Marley, several points that have not been made effectively need to be brought to light. First, President Long was fully within the limits of his power; he has never changed his story of the incident and has "stuck to his guns" on the issue; and lastly, the issue has polarized the Senate to some extent, perhaps not as nuch as the Carolinian may have signaled. Therefore, you get very few impartial opinions on the issue so it depends to whom you speak as to what story you get. The Carolinian did not mean to give an unfair impression of anyone and has re-established its policy of neutrality on such matters. Happy Alumnus Dear Editor, It was my pleasure on last Saturday night to hear the ball game played between Florida State University and Western Carolina on the Seminole Sports Network here in the Atlanta area. Bill Peterson, the former Florida State head coach and the former head coach of the Houston Oilers, best described our performance against his team. He said that our game plan and preparation was the best of any team that they had played all year. He went further to say that our youngsters never gave up and gave his team all that Information on ALASKAN and OVERSEAS EMPLOYMENT! Excellent Income. Call: (312)-741-9780 Extension 3219 cMoxe. His performance, according to Peterson, was the best performance of any of the quarterbacks that Florida State had faced all year. I hope that our students will take the time to tell our players and our coaching staff that we appreciate their effort. It made me proud and 1 am sure that this effort is appreciated by the students that are presently on campus. Let's hope that this effort will continue against Marshall and Appalachian State!
