Jazz Ensemble In Full Swing By Jim Buchanan " Staff Writer The WCU Jazz Ensemble is in full swing this year, with numerous performances scheduled for the upcoming season. The director of this year's ensemble is Mario Gaetano, who has a B.M. degree from the State University of Potsdam at New York, and a M.M. degree from East Carolina University. Gaetano has performed in numerous jazz bands and appeared in concert with several noted musicians. The Ensemble is open to any WCU student after an audition. All students are welcome to auditions which are held at the beginning of each semester. Students who play trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano, guitar, or drums are welcome. Improvisational skills are not required for membership, but adequate music reading skills are required. Improvisational skills are taught in clinic/classroom situations. Next semester the ensemble will be looking for a vocalist, male or female, to be featured on 2 or 3 numbers with the band. Interested students are advised to schedule an audition for the beginning of next semester. According to Gaetano, "The Jazz Ensemble performs in a huge variety of styles ranging from the big band era to contemporary rock, disco, jazz, and Latin styles...the band is excited and proud and works extremely hard. We feel like we've got one of the finest Jazz hands in North Carolina, right here at Western." The ensemble has players from several states, featuring Ron Simmons, Mark McKinney, Kathleen Ricky, Keith Patton, and Delmer Atkinson on the saxophone. The trombone players are Norris Barger. Richard Inlow. Bob Clark, and Warren English. On trumpet, the ensemble has John Cabaniss, Fawn Talley. David Sawyer, Mike Hedden, and Boyd Sossamon. The rythnin section consists of John Blocker, Mike Rayburn, John Reid. John Haynes, and Gray Erlacher. The manager of the group is Tom Fonner.
