  • Co-op Students Explore Careers Seventy students worked off-campus this summer in Cooperative Education Training Assignments in positions that enabled them to explore their career interests. Students traveled to positions as far away as Houston, Pittsburgh, and Miami, but the largest number of students worked in North Carolina. Listed below are the placements by School and major. ARTS AND SCIENCES Graphic Design - Lisbeth Boger worked in Eden, NC at Modern Screen Printing & Design; Robert Brown at Fiberarts Magazine in Asheville; Janet Funderburk at Ty-Par Realty in Monroe; Hughes Grogan at Archer in Winston-Salem; and Beverly Warns at Monogram Products in Largo, FL. Radio/TV/Film - Three students worked with Highgate Pictures of New York City in Highlands. NC where a CBS 'Movie of the Week' starring Lucie Arna/ was filmed. They were David Gaddy, Bill Rothermel and Martha Huntley. 'Chip' Litaker worked with WSOC TV in Charlotte. Chemistry Susan Morris received a Special Achievement Award at the end of her second Co op assignment with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Geography - Two geography majors worked in Reslon, VA with the US Geological Survey in their Cartography Department: David McCraw and Theresa Crerar. Patty McMullen worked a second summer with the National Park Service (Blue Ridge Parkway) at the Otter Creek Campground in Virginia. Kevin Taylor, a Pre-Forestry major, worked on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Blowing Rock, NC. Biology - Two Biology majors worked in the Nature Center at the Highlands Biological Station: Ellen Hughes and Joe Tennyson. English - Wayne Bowman is working with the Public Information Office at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center for the US Department of Energy. BUSINESS Marketing & Management - James Baity and David Black worked in retailing with Service Merchandise Catalog Showrooms in Charlotte; Karen Brady worked with the Nantahala Outdoor Center near Bryson City, NC; John Clements and Tommy Moore worked with Belks Stores in Charlotte; Elizabeth Freel worked with Grove Park Inn in Asheville. David Gillespie was promoted to Assistant Manager during his second Co-op term with Capitol Credit Corporation. His wife, Joanne, worked with Asheville Federal Savings & Loan Association as a teller. Aurelia Greene worked with the US Office of Personnel Management in Washington, DC as a Civil Service Retirement Claims Examiner trainee. Howard Howell completed a second term with Ball Brothers Corporation in Skyland. James Huskey worked as a Sales Representative and Recruiter for The Southwestern Company. Paula James pursued an interest in Resort Management by working at the Great Smokies Hilton. James Lanning received another promotion during this summer term with Ingle's Stores in Skyland. Jesse Matheson worked in Procurement at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center. Scott Overdorf worked with the US General Accounting Office in Washington, DC. Robin Richardson completed a second training assignment with IBM Corporation in Greensboro. Danny Rumple and Robby Russell worked with Ivey's in Charlotte in retailing. Alan Shuford completed a second assignment with High Point Special Facilities & Recreation Department in Golf Course Management. George Wait continued as a sales representative for General Mills. ACCOUNTING & INFORMATION SYSTEMS Accounting - Teresa Blackwell. Gerald Carter and Anna McBeth worked with the Internal Revenue Service; Randy Church worked with the EPA in Raleigh; Anita Clampitt with Clifton Precision in Murphy; Janet Kelly was a night auditor at Grove Park Inn in Asheville; Quez Little and John Welch worked with Lindsey, Crisp, Hughes & Mabe; Larry Smith worked with Akzona in Asheville as an internal auditor. Information Systems - Byard Bost worked with the US General Accounting Office; Tamrah Green and Duane Reid with the EPA in Raleigh; and David Nutty worked in the Data Processing Department at Angel Community Hospital. EDUCATION & PSYCHOLOGY Special Education - Cathy Conklin worked as a camp counselor for the Mental Health Mental Retardation Association in Houston, TX; Monica Mornemaii and Diane Swan worked with the emotionally disturbed at the Montanari Residential Treatment Center m HJalean, PI Recreation - Dickie Woodard worked with the NPS on the Blue Ridge Parfcwaj tor a second summer. TECHNOLOGY & APPLIED SCIENt 1 s Industrial Technology Lee Ferguson worked with Emerson Electric in his bometowa of Murphy; Tim Glavich and Jack Mincey worked in Drafting at Dayco Corporation; George Keener worked at Eaton Corpora lion in Fletcher; Dennis Porterfield worked with Northern Telecom in Raleigh; and Danny Safrit worked with Westinghouse Electric Cororalion in Charlotte. Criminal Justice - Dennis Harris is a Criminal Investigator with the USDAFod & Nutrition Service in Washington, DC and Melanie Waters was a Claims Examiner with the US Office of Personnel Management in Washington. NURSING & HEALTH SCIENCES Medical Records Administration - Junior MRA Students: I'ani Burch worked in the Murphy Medical Center; Audrey Hines worked with the Polyclinic Medical Center in Harrisburg, PA; and Diane Clark with Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, TN. Emergency Medical Care - Jay Schreiner worked with Triangle Ambulance Service in Raleigh and (lift Andrews with Guilford County Emergency Services in Greensboro. Medical Technology - Martha Jones worked with the mentally retarded for the Edgecombe-Nash Mental Health Association in Rocky Mount, NC.
