  • Cites family obligation THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/May 1, 1980/ Page 21 Western's track & field coach resigns Paul Jones, track and field and cross country coach at WCU for the past eight years, announced his resignation here Tuesday. Jones, 38, was named to WCU's coaching staff in August, 1972 and has guided his Catamount teams to 187 victories against 79 defeats in eight cross country and track and field campaigns. This season's track and field team posted the highest finish and point total - fifth place and 55 points - in the Southern Conference Championship Meet since WCU joined the league in 1976. Bob Waters, WCU's athletic director, accepted Jones' resignation and said a search for a new track and field and cross country coach will begin immediately. "Coach Jones has guided our teams to some bright moments and we regret losing a loyal, dedicated member of our coaching family," said Waters. Health and Physical Education from WCU in 1970. He spent two years (1970-71; 71 -72) as assistant track and field coach at West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia before returning to his alma mater. Jones lists among his achievements and honors NCAA Division II District 3 Cross Country Coach of the Year (1974); team championship in several track and field events; and having three of his athletes place in NCAA track and field and cross country national championship meets. "Western Carolina has done a lot for me and I hope I've done something to help the University," said Jones. "I think it would be impossible to find a better group of coaches, teachers and students to work with than I have been associated with at Western," he added. Jones said he resigned to "devote more time to family obligations" and plans to accept a public school position or enter private business. "I an weighing a couple of options at this time and I hope to reach a decision within the next few weeks," he added. Jones is ;t native of Forest City and attended Cool Springs High School where he established a state prep record for the one-mile run. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, two Bron/e Stars, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Purple Heart during the Vietnam conflict while serving with the U.S. Navy with a Marine Corps detachment. Following his military stint, he graduated from Western Carolina in 1969. He captained WCU's first cross country and track and field teams during the 1967-68 school year. He received his master's degree in WCU signs volleyball standouts Two volleyball standouts at Plantation High in Plantation, Florida, Robyn Keeler, and Janice Burke, have signed athletic grant-in-aids to attend WCU next fall. Keller, a two-sport standout at Plantation, excelled in both softball and volleyball. She was named to the 1979 All Broward County large-school volleyball team as a senior, hitting on 98 per cent of her serves and averaging 12 spikes a game. A two-year starter, Keller received Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in 1978 and was her team's most improved player in 1977. In softball, the 5'8 Keeler amassed 60 wins in her pitching career with 25 of those coming in 1979. She has made several all-conference and all-county teams in that sport. Burke, a teammate of Keeler's, is a strong frontline player who highlighted her senior season in the State Playoffs with a 25 spike, 4 dink performance over Sandalwood (Jacksonville) High. An Honorable Mention All-Conference selection, Burke also excels in softball as a first baseman. Both girls will participate in intercollegiate softball at WCU, and were recently nominated to play in the first Florida all-star high school volleyball game. Western's volleyball coach, Judy Murray, to begin her second season at WCU is extremely pleased over the signings. "We need some fine athletes in our program and I believe we have just that in Robyn and Janice. They are from a fine high school program at Plantation with Coach Marge Payton, and they are the type of high-quality student-athletes we appreciate so much at WCU." Chancellor Robinson honors 78 WCU employees WCU honored 78 employees Wednesday for service to the university and state at its annual service awards luncheon in Brown Cafeteria. Dr. H.F.
