  • Page 20 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/May 1, 1980 Surles on sports By Steve Surles V * Even though the baseball Cats were eliminated from the Southern Conference title chase in the 8-6 loss to East Tennessee State Monday, no one can argue that the team didn't surprise a lot of people...The 22 wins [with a chance for one more on Saturday] makes this club the second winningest club in the school's history, behind the 27-5 team in 1977...numerous individual and team records have either been broken or are close to being broken...Willie Carpenter has set r/ew career highs in games [128], at bats [463], hits [167], doubles [35], home runs [16], runs batted in [137] and total bases [266]. Willie has established single season marks in games [36] and hits [55]. Willie's not the only one to rewrite the record books...Billy Boyd's 39 singles breaks the record he set last year when he had 34...the team set a new mark for hits [395], breaking the old mark of 356 set in 1978...all this with one more game yet to play. Western Carolina fared well in several of the Southern Conference and AIAW State Tournaments played last week...The Cats' track and field team collected the most points ever as they finished fifth...the golf team, still playing as of the printing of this column, are in seventh place, the highest they've ever been in SC tournament play. The women's softball team finished second in the Division I tourney and placed 6 players on the all-tournament team...not bad. Everyone agrees that Willie Carpenter, a four-year standout in both football and baseball, is one of the classiest student-athletes ever to be a part of the WCU athletic program...he'll be missed in many ways, and I wish him luck in whatever he does after graduation. I hate lo see Paul Jones leave Western Carolina, also. He's a class guy who has always helped me in every way he could. I wish him luck also. Coach Jones is a lot of fun to talk to because he knows a lot about sports, music and history, my three favorite topics and it doesn't hurt that he's a Yankee fan, either... NOTES IN GENERAL: East Carolina has done it to us again...our October 18th meeting with them, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., has been moved to 2 p.m. and will be the Bucs' homecoming... The last time we played ECU's homecoming we had going into the fourth quarter... Also, those of you who are dashing off for the summer, be sure and get your Clemson tickets first thing when you get back this fall... One of the top football magazines in the area picked the football Cats for second in the league behind UT-C, and the same publication has picked WCU roundballers [basketballers] to win it all...gee, whiz...somebody likes us...I'd say the 1980-81 athletic season at WCU could be one of the most interesting ever...just look at the returning talent in baseball, basketball, and football, and add the good recruiting we've done to date...WCU certainly will be watched by the rest of the league next year...also the women's basketball, volleyball and gymnastics look to be improved...I can hardly wait... On the National scene...Bob Horner seems to have called the Braves' bluff and won in his fight to keep out of exile at Richmond, Virginia...really, it is a wonderful town...who would have thought the Oakland A's would [or could] take six in a row from the California Angels...stranger things have happened...Billy Martin hasn't punched anyone out yet...anyway, check out the Angels in September, that's when it counts...really, Gene Autry wears a white hat so he has to win a pennant sometime. Don't forget, Saturday is the day of Shep Messing's soccer clinic at the stadium...everyone, be on your best behavior...Shep's a Harvard man...he's also probably the best American-born soccer player today and is an extremely colorful and interesting individual... Everyone Welcome Make Your Appointments Today!: WCU golf takes tournment Western Carolina's golf team continues to play in the Southern Conference golf tournament at Pinehurst, NC. The Cats jumped from eighth to seventh place on Tuesday, the second round of play. East Tennessee State leads the tournament by seven strokes over Furman University. The Bucs' Mike Hulbert shot an even-par 72 to lead his team, while Furman's Lee Summers shot a 75 to stay in second place in individual race. The Cats' jump from eighth to seventh was due to good, all-around rounds by the entire squad, and represents the highest a WCU golf team has been in a Southern Conference Championship tournament. The tournament concluded Wednesday. Tennis over The men's tennis team closed out its 1980 season with a last place finish in the Southern Conference championships held April 24-26 at Lexington, VA. The Cats, 3-14 in the regular season, finished the tournament with one point as the team placed behind conference champion UT-Chattanooga (66), Furman (57), ASU (53.5), East Tennessee State (44), Davidson (36), The Citadel (29), VMI (20), and Marshall (17.5). UT-Chattanooga won four individual singles championships and one doubles crown en route to their tournament victory. you'll find kin the Classified! ^k. •■* * - -or-..-- - ■ ^ Repairs On. ^ All Makes Doering's Bicycle Shop Featuring Panasonic & Takara 10 & 12 Speeds Quality Parts & Accessories 5% Off Any Bicycle Purchase With This Ad Expires May 10 441 South Franklin, NC Mon. thru Sat. 9-5:30 369-8518
