February 7, 1980 No doubt team Is playing their best Cottrell's expectations exceeded by young Cats From Page 21 Cottrell labels Marshall and V.M.I, the two toughest places in the Southern Conference to plaj basketball. "We have never won at Marshall and V.M.I, has a tremendous record in "The Pit". Fortunately, we played at V.M.I, last year when the cadets were on a break and everyone says that can mean as much as ten points," he explained. The Cats defeated Marshall 76-67 two weeks ago in Reid Gymnasium and lost to V.M.I, the following Monday 72-71. "Marshall has been an up and down team," advised Cottrell. "They have lost some games they should have won, but then they blew out Furman last week. They have tremendous talent. Our team will have more pressure on them up there than they have had all season with the big, partisan crowd, television, plus Marshall has been pointing to this game for over two weeks." Cottrell says his team will be playing against two of the toughest players his team has ever had to defense in Marshall's point Greg White and V.M.I.'s sharp- shooting Andy Kolesar. "Those two have hurt us more than any other two players in the Southern Conference over the past two seasons," he explained. "Who would have ever thought that we would be fighting it out for second place with four games to play," asked Cottrell. "There is no doubt that this team is playing the best basketball of any team at anytime in my three seasons here at Western Carolina. . .they have exceeded my expectations," he noted. "However," he warned, "this is still a very.young basketball team and they could really cool off under the pressure we are going to face in the next four games." EVERGREEN MCAT-DAT Review Course. Cottrell is elated over the performance of his young Catamounts over the past eight games, "We talk about the team concept, well this team epitomizes the term," he emphasized. "When one olaver has an off nisht, another one takes up the slack," he explains. Cottrell says this was the case in the win over Appalachian State. "I hey .were playing Ronnie Carr tight, so we went to Greg Dennis and he scores seven straight baskets early in the game. Then, when they started playing Greg tight, we got the ball to Kenny Trimier and he scores 16 points in the second half. "No one is able to stop us by stopping one or two players," advised Cottrell. "Greg and Ronnie can shoot with anyone from the outside, Kenny is really coming on as an offensive threat, Harry (Dolan) has been super on the boards the last three weeks, and Kevin (Young) and Larry (Caldwell) have worked extremely well at the point guard. Plus," he added, "we have been getting some very effective play off the bench from Forrest Callaway and Clarence DesBordes in key situations." Dennis continues to lead the Southern Conference in scoring with his 20.6 average while Trimier is the rebound leader with 10.8 per game. Carr ranks amoung the conference's top five scorers with 17.4 per game average. Kevin Young, the floor leader, is second in the conference's assists rankings with 5.5 a game. Senior Harry Dolan joins the two freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup and has responded with 6 points and 7 rebounds a game during Western's hot streak. "They are all big ones now," says Cottrell. "We have got four games to play and we are going to be in a pressure cooker each game." "We started the season with a winning season as our goal," said Cottrell. "We have already reached that goal, so everything from here on out is gravy, and I think this bunch would like to have a lot of gravy." The Sylva Church of Christ Welcomes You!
