  • Page 8 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/February 7, 1980 Cullowhee doubles in size overnight WCU grows 400 acres Seldom does a university campus double in size overnight, but WCU did something similar to thai last week when Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Hennessee of Sylva donated 400 acres of mountain, land to the University's Development Foundation. Actually, the land donated by the Hennessee family does not adjoin WCU's campus and was donated for use in support of the Western Carolina athletic program, but the 400-acre tract nearly equals, by comparison, the approximately 400-acre Cullowhee campus. The land, five miles east of Cherokee in the Shut in Creek area of Jackson County, is believed to be the largest single tract of land ever donated to the University. Valued in excess of $146,000, tentative plans call for the land to be sold and the proceeds used to establish a challenge to which others might respond. "We are especially pleased that Jack and Joan Hennessee have chosen to step forward with such a significant contribution to Western Carolina University's athletic program," said WCU Chancellor Dr. H.F. Robinson, who accepted the gift. "The Hennessee* have long been friends and supporters of the University and this gift underscores our shared commitment and dedication to make the athletic program favorably reflect on not only Western Carolina University, but the region and the state as well," Robinson said. Both Hennessee and his wife Joan have been involved in the lumber industry since 1951 and have been very active in church, civic and social organi/ations and service. Hennessee is vice chairman of the WCU Board of Trustees and serves on the board's property and buildings committee, executive committee, and as an endowment fund trustee. He is president of the W.C. Hennessee Lumber Co., Inc., of Sylva; W.C. Hennessee Land Co., Inc.; and Jack M. Hennessee, Inc. He serves as vice president and director of CMC Hardwoods, Dover, Mass., and SCH Corporation. Louisburg, N.C. He is also a partner in HMB Dry Kiln Co. of Sylva. Mrs. Hennessee, the former Joan Dichl. is a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and a 1951 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she earned a bachelor's degree in both chemistry and clothing and textile retailing. Aside from having been involved in nearly every aspect of the lumber business, Mrs. Hennessee has taught at Cherokee and Sylva high schools, and has served as the Jackson County director for the U.S. Census in I960. "We love these mountains and these people," Mrs. Hennessee said in making the donation. "We wanted to do something beneficial with the land and something to evidence our feelings for this area and the university," Mrs. Hennessee said. Hennessee said he hoped the sale of the land to establish a challenge would "stimulate others in the region to provide the kind of assistance Western learns will need to be competitive in the Southern Conference." Hennessee came to Sylva in 1935 from his Campaign, Tenn., birthplace and graduated from Sylva High School in 1948. After attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for three years, he returned to Sylva and joined the W.C. Hennessee Companies.
