  • Page 8/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/January 17, 1980 WCU vice-chancellor Music presidency sought by Dooley Dr. James E. Dooley, vice chancellor for development and special services and acting director of the Fine Arts Center at WCU has been nominated as one of two national candidates for the presidency-elect of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). Announcement of the nomination was made in a full-page article appearing in the December edition of the "Music Educators Jounal," national publication of the MENC. Also nominated was Russell P. Getz, professor of music at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa. The Music Educators National Conference is a voluntary, nonprofit organization representing all phases of music education in schools, colleges, universities, and teacner-educatton institutions. It has an enrollment of some 63,000 persons. The actual election process will begin in January with the distribution of ballots to eligible MENC members. Members are asked to return ballots before March 7 indicating their choice of either Dooley or Getz. The candidate elected will serve a two-year term as president-elect beginning July 1, 1980, and will succeed to office as national president of the organization in 1982. Dooley joined WCU in 1969 as head of the department of music. He served as acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at WCU from 1973 until 1975. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Dooley earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He holds the master's degree from North Texas State University and the Ph.D. from Florida State University. Dr. Dooley has taught public school instrumental and vocal music, has been a church musician, and has organized and directed community music organizations. He was president of the Southern Division of MENC from 1976 through 1978 and was a member of the MENC National Executive Board. He has been active as a clinician, adjudicator, consultant, and guest conductor for regional and all-state choruses and has served as an American Choral Directors Association state chairman, an MENC state research chairman, a member of the editorial board of "Music Educators Journal." He was a principal writer for Task Group V of the MENC Commission on Teacher Education, and a committee chairman for MENC division and national conferences. His publications include reviews, monographs, articles, and choral music. Listed in "Who's Who in the South and Southwest" and in "Outstanding Educators of America," Dr. Dooley is also a scholar on the work of Thomas Hastings, a 19th century American church musician. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, national honorary society in music, and is an honorary life member of Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Kappa Psi. In his statement to the MENC membership, Dr. Dooley said, "Our (MENC) programs must be increasingly responsive to tne critical needs 01 individual teachers as well as music education generally. They must be sufficiently flexible to accommodate the diversity found throughout the country. And they must be anticipatory rather that reactive, contributing to consistency and stability in the profession. What we must do is provide the most effective support we can for those who daily enrich the lives of young people through music," he said.
