  • Page 4 THI- WESTERN CAROLINIAN/October 11, 1979 Carolinian newsbriefs Choir tours The WCU Concert Choir will begin a four-day. seven concert tour of the western pan ot the state October 14. Programs on the tour will include performances of the Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes, a selection of sacred music through the ages, Renaissance madrigals from England, France and Italy, and contemporary English music. The choir, directed by WCU Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Rohert A. Holquist, includes some 37 singers. Accompanists for the group are Tammy Champion of Winston-Salem and Lisa Hunt. Soloists performing with the choir on the tour will include Margaret Davis of Hazelwood, Myra Vassian of Cullowhee. Robin Wilde of Canton, Felix Batton of Roanoke Rapids, and Temple Smith. WCU associate professor of music. The tour scheduled includes performances at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 al First Methodist Church in Waynesville, at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at First Baptist Church in Canton. 1 p.m. Oct. 15 at East Burke High School in Morganton, at 8 p.m. Oct. 15 at Catawba College in Salisbury, at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at West Charlotte High School, at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at Bessemer City High School, and at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Ml. Pisgah Academy in Candler. Music Recital Ihe WCU concert choir will perform at 8 p.m. October 18 in the Music Recital Hall at WCU. The concert will be held the day after the group returns from a four-clay tour of the western part of the state. The choir, which numbers 37 singing members, is directed by Dr. Robert A. Holquist, IWCU associate professor of music. The program will include the "Liebeslieder" waltzes by Brahms, a selection of sacred music from different centuries, and contemporary English music. Also on the program arc five Renaissance madrigals, to be performed by the WCU Madrigal Singers. Soloisls w ill) the choir will include Dr. I'emple Smith. WCU associate professor of music, and students Myra Vassian of Cullowhee, Margaret Davis of Hazelwood, Robin Wilde of Canton, and Felix Ballon of Roanoke Rapids, I he performance is sponsored by the WCU department of music. There will be no charge for admission. Grant awarded WCU has been awarded grant monies of $181,913 by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to continue its Upward Bound and Special Services programs. Both programs are part of the U.S. Office of Education's "trio" programs. The third. Talent Search, was funded for $69,580 earlier this year at WCU. Upward Bound attempts to identify students of average and above-average abilities from low-income families and help them to develop their potential. Special Services provides college freshmen and sophomores with tutoring, special academic classes and labs, counseling and advisement. Frats to clean WCU's eight social fraternities have issued a challenge to other Jackson County clubs and organizations to match their effort on Jackson County Clean-up Day, Oct. 13. The fraternities have pledged to clean up a four-mile Stretch of roadside on N.C. Highway 107 from the Tuckaseigee bridge in Cullowhee to Sylva Webster High School. Fraternities participating in the clean-up are Delta Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha. Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Lambda Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Theta Xi. The Chamber of Commerce will supply bags and clean-up signs for individuals or groups interested in joining the Clean-up Day effort. Contact the Jackson County Chamber ol Commerce at 586-2155. Ground School Southwestern Technical College will be offering Private Pilot Ground School beginning October 9 through November 22 on campus at STC. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thrusday from 7 to 9 p.m. Frank DiCillo Jr. will be the course instructor. Topics covered in the course include: Airplane systems weight and balance; Documents; Aviation Weather; Weather Services; Computer; Airspace Aeronautical Charts; Radio Navigation; Medical Factors; Cross Country Planing; and one session on Asheville Air Traffic Control. NTE registration Prospective teachers who plan to take the National Teacher Examinations Nov. 10 at WCU have less than two weeks to register with Educational Testing Service (ETS), which conducts the tests. Dr. Thomas Westcott, WCU coordinator of counseling and testing, said registrations should be mailed in time to reach ETS by Oct. 17, when regular registration closes. Late registrations will be accepted until Oct. 24, he said, but a $5 penalty fee will be assessed. Registration forms and instructions may be obtained from the WCU Testing Center located in Bird Building, or directly from the National Teacher Examinations, ETS. Box 911, Princeton, NJ 08541. NSF awards The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded WCU $13,600 to upgrade the university's physiology laboratory. The grant was made through the NSF's undergraduate scientific equipment program to purchase a student-oriented physiograph system allowing experimentation in animal physiology not currently possible at WCU.
