  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN The Voice of the Students Thursday, September 20 1979 Photo by Cliff Andrews WCU student dies in accident A one car accident on Highway 281 claimed the life of Elizabeth Owings, a Western Carolina student, at approximately 11:30 Tuesday night. The vehicle, a 1968 Ford Thunderbird, was travelling towards Cullowhee when it left the right side of the road and came to rest forty feet down an embankment. The accident occurred at Niggerskull Creek and Cedar Cliff Baptist Church Road, approximately three miles east of Highway 107 near Cedar Cliff Lake. Miss Owings was an 18 year old freshman from Charlotte. She resided at 329 Scott Hall. Injured in the accident were Darvl Watson, 18, who was drivingjhe vehicle; Kathy Wheatley, 18; and David Oder, 17. All three are freshmen at WCU. Watson and Oder were taken to C.J. Harris Hospital where they were listed in satisfactory condition, having remained stable since the time of their admittance. Both are expected to be released within the next few days. Miss Wheatley was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville after observation at C.J. Harris. As of late Wednesday afternoon she remained in the intensive care unit, listed in serious condition. She was reported to have had a collapsed lung and was to require plastic surgery. Both Miss Owings and Miss Wheatley remained trapped in the overturned vehicle for a period of one to one and a half hours. Miss Owings was pronounced dead at approximately 3:00a.m. Tramper victim of hit and run Harold Welch- Tramper, of Cherokee, was killed Wenesday. September 13 on NC 107 near the Ashe Settlement Bridge. James Buchanon Dickinson, a student at WCU was arrested 12 hours later at the scene of the accident and charged by State Trooper james Cruzan with hit and run driving resulting in death and with manslaughter. The incident occurred while Tramper was walking on the side of the road against traffic. He was hit from behind by a vehicle passing another vehicle. Cruzan's eleven hour investigation was started when a report was received by the Jackson County Sheriff's office at about 7:20 a.m. that a body was lying on the shoulder of NC 107. The investigation showed that Tramper had been dead more than ten hours. Tramper's body was taken to Moody Funeral Home in Sylva. He was the son of Welch Tramper of Cherokee. Vol. XLV, No. 5 Macon Aero, CAP caught in plane crash communication breakdown by EDDIE YANDLE Associate Editor An airplane crash in the Glenville area last Wednesday evening has brought some ill feelings between Macon County Aero of Franklin and the Jackson County Civil Air Patrol. The Jackson Co. Sheriff's Dept., who found out about the crash at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, didn't notify Macon County Aero for assistance until 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Both owner-operator Tom Hagan and chief pilot Tom McCarty of Macon County Aero believe that if they had been notified earlier the plane would have been found on Thursday instead of when they did at 9:18 a.m. Friday. The two said that when they were notified by the Jackson County Sheriff's Dept., visibility was much poorer than earlier that day and it would have been much easier to have found the plane that morning. Carl Ward, of the CAP, said the reason Macon County Aero was not notified until later that day was because the pilot of the'plane, Dennis Wells, had walked out from the crash to receive assistance and it was believed that he could lead rescue squads back to the sight. Mr. Wells was unable to do so which prompted the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad to request that the Sheriffs Dept. get in touch with Macon County Aero to >egin an air search. McCarty and Hagan said it only took around 30 minutes to find the plane Friday with clear visibility. Hagan hinted that if the body of the deceased, Kim Ledford, had been found earlier that Ledford may have lived. He also placed most of the blame on the CAP for not communicating with them earlier Thursday that would have allowed more time for the search. The Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad arrived shortly after Hagan and McCarty sighted the plane. They found Mr. Ledford and took him to Angel Hospital in Franklin where Dr. Will Clark, local pathologist, did the autopsy. At press time, it was uncertain of the time of death. Mr. Hagan said this had not been the first time the CAPhad not co-operated with them. He said that the "...CAP has never called us," for assistance in search procedures which seemed odd to them since they are the only experienced rescue men in the area. McCarty emphasized this saying, "I average 800-1000 hours (flying time) per year.'' The CAP according to McCarty only has one licensed pilot, CAP director Dallas Stephens, who is only a student pilot that means he cannot have an occupant in the plane with him. The plane was determined to be totalled by the insurance company who turned the salvagable parts over to the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad and the CAP to be divided equally. A limited number of tickets to the Appalachian State game in Boon will be on sale beginning at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Jordan-Phillips Field House,
