Robinson says he thinks the USA should eventually normalize relationships with Cuba. He was there with the Association of American State Colleges and Universities December 2-10, 1978. "1 don't think that we can live with the Cuban situtation too long on any other basis. It's only 90 miles south of us. I saw 12 Russian MiGs while we crossed the harbor. "We were told explicitly that we were not to photograph any military installations or activities. there were also four or five ships waiting in the harbor to unload at all times. We weren't allowed into the beautiful harbor area either. "There's no way under the sun, the way the situtation is now, to know whether they have any missiles or not. They could have anything they wanted in then Dr. Robinson said Russia is paying a foreign aid bill in Cuba right now of about $2.4 billion yearly and $7.8 million daily. "I don't think Russia wants to continue that payment. But I think whatever Castro feels he can use or support, he gets it from them. Chancellor Robinson inspected a Cuban day care center while on that communist island December 2 through 10. "There are many things that Russia is paying for now that they would like for us to pick up now. It will be worth quite a bit for the U.S. to establish relationships with Cuba and know what's going on down there. It would help prevent any further spread of the Castro regime in Latin America and I think that our policy of non-military intervention would not work. "The best way would be to recognize them, and it would also be advantageous to Cuba. I don't think American will actively pursue this, but they have already established relationships with Red China, and to me it makes better sense to recognize Cuba. "I also think that many more people in the States feel that we sould be on a much more friendly basis with Cuba too," he said. He said he didn't believe there would have to be a change in the Cuban government either, "no more than there was in the mainland Chinese government. He absolutely has too strong of a hold on the island." Dr. Robinson is chairman of the AASCU's Committe on Agriculture, Renewable Resources and Rural Development. His trip was sponsored by the Ford Foundation. "While it was enjoyable trip, you never feel at ease in a place like that. You can't feel at ease in a communist country when you feel that they might be watching your actions and we understood that our room might be bugged." He said there were absolutely no communications whatsoever with America. "If anything happens to you, it's just like you were on another planet." The AASCU members were flown into Cuba on a chartered Floridian airline. It was three hours late in returning to pick them up December 10. "There were only communist countries' airlines at the airport. We were beginning to get a little anxious when our flight was that late. And we were not guaranteed any safety of any kind in or out of the country. But there also were not any anti-American demonstrations." Chancellor Robinson said he hardly saw any police. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
