In other business, the Senate passed by consent its third formal motion of the year. Senate Resolution (now Senate Regulation) 714 will be repealed immediately pending presidential approval. Ms. Nelson is expected to approve the motion, which abolishes the government's North Carolina Student Legislature Advisory Committee. According to Chairman Richard Sullins. the Rules Committee decided to give the motion a favorable report for three reasons: •The NCSL Advisory- Committee noted no problems with the NCSL. •Current NCSL Chairman Steve Warren has agreed to give the Senate a report at its request. •Sponsors of the committee felt that its purpose could best be accomplished on an informal basis. Clubs and Organizations Committee Chairman Bill Hooker read a motion for the approval of the constitution of the International Student Organizations, which has open membership to all WCU students. President Nelson, encouraging the Senate to approve ISO's constitution, said that "international students on campus, predominantly Jamaicans, would like to get together in a campus club open for all students." According to Article Two of ISO's constitution, its main purpose will be "...through meetings, programs and activities...to promote feelings of international understanding and friendship in the university and the community." Academic Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Naylor told the Senate that his committee, in conjunction with Academic Assistance Director Steve Nye, has been working on publishing pamphlets on tutorial assistants, academic grievance process, student rights and various other topics that should be beneficial to all students. The pamphlets are expected to be available in a few weeks. Addressing the Senate again, President Nelson said she felt fall semester had been very successfull for the government "as far as legislation passed, and the budget." She expressed hope that the Office of Legal Assistance will have its off-campus housing guide available within a month. She also said Research Coordinator Debbie Shew, in conjunction with the Cafeteria Foods Advisory Committee and Vice Chancellor for Student Development Glenn Stillion, has developed a survey to be conducted for student opinions on the campus cafeterias. The surveys are expected to be polled by the end of January or the first week in February. Ms. Nelson also said she is looking forward to working with the Off-Campus Cooperative Housing Committee and said there are still committee positions open. Vice President Phil Cates introduced Carol Acuff, chief justice of the supreme court, to the Senate. He said the courts are not being utilized this year and invited the Senators to talk to Ms. Acuff after the turn to Page 16, Please SKI SPREE at Cataloochee ^ / Take the coupon with you to Cataloochee Ski Area and ski all day, any day Monday — Thursday, for only $ 10.00!
