  • Ridin' high OCTOBER 26, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 11 WCU breathing down UT-C's neck Western Carolina resumes its quest of the Southern Conference football championship this weekend when the Catamounts travel to Lexington. Virginia for a first ever meeting with Virginia Military Institute. Kickoff time for Saturday's key Southern Conference games if 1:30 p.m. at VMI's 10,000 seat Alumni Memorial Field. Western took last week off from the conference title chase, but ran its win streak to four games with a 26-11 victory over Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. Head Coach Bob Waters says he and his Catamounts are looking forward to the remaining four games on the 1978 schedule. "The game this week is the biggest game we have played this season, and if we are fortunate enough to defeat VMI, then the following game against UT-Chattanooga will be the biggest, and if we continue to win, the same will hold true for the final two games with Furman and Appalachian," said Waters when asked about the importance of the upcoming game. "All of our remaining games are conference games and they are all big ones as I think the conference championship race will go down to the wire," he added. UT-Chattanooga, Western's November 4 opponent, took over sole possession of first place with its 13-9 win over Furman last Saturday. The Moccasins, now 3-0 in the conference, are unbeaten in their last 15 games. The Catamounts are in second place with a 2-0 record, followed by Appalachian State, The Citadel and Furman. VMI, 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference to date this season after tying for the championship last season, has been alternately hot and cold this season. The Keydets were impressive in wins over Virginia Richmond and Bucknell, but despite fine defensive efforts, dropped close contests to East Carolina, William and Mary, The Citadel and Lehigh, due largely to an inconsistent offense. Defense has been Coach Bob Thalman's forte as the Keydets lead the Southern Conference in pass and scoring defense, are third in rushing defense and second in overall defense. The Keydets pass defense was ranked fourth best in the nation last week. "We are very impressed with their defense," says Waters of VMI. "They are big, strong and agressive and have probably the best pass defense we have seen to date this season." Waters, who claimed his 60th head coaching victory in the Wofford game, also holds the VMI kicking game in high regard. "They have the finest kicking game we have prepared for," he noted. "And, Craig Jones IRED HOT SPECIAL LIST $7.98 t.d.'s SPECIAL PRICE $5.79 Other New Releases Billy Joel & Elton John t.d.'s news stand » record shop (Keydel specialist) has to be one of the best field goal kickers in the country He tan win a game by himself." Jones has kicked 10 field goals this season aiul has not missed inside Ihe 40 yard line. His 38 field goals ranks loth in NCAA history, VMI is an outstanding school with a class program and a tremendous tradition, We are looking forward lo playing up there for the first time," said Waters, "lt will take the same type effort we had against The Citadel to come oul a winner again this Saturday," he added. Looking back. Waters says his evaluation of the Catamounts performance in the win over Wofford was "more positive" after viewing the game films. "1 realized we didn't play as poorly as I initially thought we did. The defense did an outstanding job. Our offense was somewhat disappointing in'that we made a lot of mistakes, lacked concentration, and should have scored at least twice more," he explained. Waters cited the defense, which held Wofford to only 93 yards of offense, and the performances of nose guard Ty Smith, linebacker Charlie Hughes, and freshman George Alston who was making his first start of the season as a replacement for the injured Sidney Cunningham. "The entire unit-down linemen, ends and linebackers, and the secondary-did a good job," he added. "Offensively," Waters said, "our line played well, particularly Curtis Allen, Steve Dunn, Robbie Vannov and Clarence Gibbs. Our running backs were disappointing as they did not run well, except for Robert Brown, and did a poor job of blocking. Our wideouts started slow, but came on. Mike (Pusev) threw well (14 of 28 for 200 yards and two TD's)." "One thing wc- are going to gel straightened out this week is our kicking game...it was just awful and we are lucky it did not hurt us worse," he explained. The Cats missed two conversion kicks, returned only two of nine punts, and averaged only 36 yards per punt. Happiness WCU defensive tackle John Strong emits a gleeful sigh as the Cats coasted bv Wofford for their fourth win in a row, 26-11.
