  • OCTOBER 12, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 11 The WCU soccer team—remember them? The world's most popular sport by OWEN GIBBY Contributing Writer WCU is the scene of the world's most popular team sport. That sport is not football, basketball or baseball--it is soccer. In case everyone has forgotten, Western has a soccer team. And the team has gotten off to a great start, posting a winning record. But like everywhere else in the United Stales at this time of year, WCU is caught up in the fervor of football, and other sports are overshadowed. However, soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in the country today and by far the most popular sport ill the rest of the world. "There are more countries in the world soccer Federation than in the United Nations," says Rupert Stout, of WCU's soccer team. Rupert was born in England and learned to play soccer there. "I started playing when I was nine years old. as goalie. Shortly afterwards, my father came to work at Lockheed in Atlanta, and we moved to the Slates." Soccer is extremely popular in England; even more so than football or basketball in the United States. "There are ninety-two profi ssional soccer teams in the EFA (English Football Association)." Rupert continues, "and the teams are sponsored by districts, not cities. London, for example, has many pro teams." According to Stout, besides having more teams England has more violent spectators. "The average attendance at a soccer game in England is about 50,000, but there have been crowds in some countries of 200.000. And the fans are rowdy, wild; much worse than those at football games. "There are no obstacles such as fences to keep fans off the field. The only retaliation to spectator violence and rioting is to fine the home team." "lt seems to me," Stout goes on, "that soccer is more of a national institution to England than is any spoil to the United States. Some of the soccer teams in England are 50-100 years old. Team support passes through families from generation to generation. Each nam even has an inspirational song, which is sung by fans at a game. Anywhere, the home team has the advantage because the noise of the home crowd acts as a twelfth man on the field. "One would not take his family to a soccer game in England as we do at athletic contests here in the states. Nor would he take a date. Soccer to an Englishman means rowdineas with a bunch of friends. This trend has developed in just the last fifteen yean or so." Soccer is almost as popular throughout the rest of the wmld. For example, the champion international team is Argentina. In that country, factories and stores close earl) so people can watch then plav. The sport is also growing in tin- United Stales, and hopefully WCU. "Soccer can be popular anywhere," claims Stout, Pete Craymer "but it's a demanding sport. One has to plaj year round. Beginners should plav forty games a year, and the average player, Sixty. Some professional teams plav as much as 100." "Also, the game itself takes longer lo play than football; the minimum time limit to a soccer match is 40 minutes. And those 90 minutes are tough; some of the players, particularly halfbacks, may run more than Rve miles during the game." However, soccer has many advantages over sports Such as football and basketball. Stout points OUt, "A soccer player can be anv si/e, from 5-2 to 6-5. So a wide range of people can plav. And despite the difference in si/e between players, very few injuries occur in a game." "And." Sloul explains. "I think the game is more exciting than a lot of other sports, because the players have to be so versatile; they have to be able to plav several positions. Also, the action is very diversified. One minute a player mav be shooting the ball, the next minute he is an attacker trying to stop the ball." The soccer program at WCU is still in the growing stage, but it displays potential. Coach Charles Schradei 's team is currently leading the Southern Conference al 1-0-1. And last year, during one streak. Western hooters recorded seven straight shutouts. ■•Western doesn't do that bad considering thev don't have a full scholarship program." savs Stout. "Thai is the main reason that soccer has been so slow to develop at many colleges, including WCU." However, some funds are alloled to the team. Scott Grumman who was All-Southern Conference lasl year, receives some financial help through the soccer program. The growing interest in soccer in the area could provoke some changes. Western plays some of the top teams in the South this year, including Clemson, The Citadel. Erskine and Appalachian. So far this year. Appalachian has averaged 3.800 fans at home games. "The average crowd for a soccer game at Western has been about 200-350." adds Stout, "and the games are free.'' .Jurn to Page 12 THE DEPOT Restaurant and Lounge East Sylva Shopping Center 586-8656 ENTERTAINMENT •Mark Pruitt & The New Day Country Band will be playing in the Lounge, Sat, 9:p.m.-l:00a.m Cover Charge $3.00 Lounge Hours: 5 p.m.-l a.m. Daily Mon.-Fri.
