  • Kevin Young APRIL 13, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 Top WNC netter signs grant with Western Western North Carolina's prep basketball player of the year, Kevin Young of Hendersonville High, has signed a grant-in-aid with WCU, becoming the first recruit of WCU head coach Steve Cottrell. Young, a 6-1 all-state guard, led Hendersonville to a 28-1 record last season and third place finish among North Carolina's 3-A schools. His 20.8 scoring average and outstanding clutch play made him the most highly recruited player in WNC. "I'm elated," said WCU's Cottrell, who coached the Catamounts through the 1977-78 season but arrived after recruiting for that team had been completed. Young thus becomes Cottrell's first recruit for his young WCU program. "Of all the players we recruited, Kevin has been our top prospect all along," said Cottrell. "We feel he's perfect for Western Carolina in every way...he's a quality player, a quality student and a quality person. He is the kind of individual we want to start building our program with." Young averaged 8.1 rebounds, had 196 assists and 92 steals during Hendersonville's highly successful season when the Bearcats were ranked No. 1 among all of the large schools in WNC's 17 counties. Young produced some exceptional performances during the year, but among the more notable were: 13 points in the last quarter of the district tournament semifinal game; 16 in the last quarter of the finals; and 33 in the state tournament consolation game. Pardue, who already has a legendary career in high school basketball, was the WNC coach of the vear this season "1 think it is indicative of Kevin's success to look at the achievements of the Hendersonville team. Kevin has had great coaching and we think he will blend perfectly into our system," said Cottrell. "We expect him to contribute right away." "1 wish him nothing but the best of luck in his future as a college player," said Pardue. "A player of Kevin's caliber will make his own breaks because of his dedication, desire, ability and leadership. He has unlimited abilities. His ability to hang in the air and shoot has lengthened with strength. I think he falls into the category of being the most complete player in the area in years." Cottrell called Young one of the best in the state and said the signing was "even nicer because he is an athlete from the area and solid programs are built by having the great player stay near home to play." "We couldn't ask for a better start than to sign Kevin Young and I'm extremely excited about his decison to join us," Cottrell said. Q: The best water for beer comes from: a) Big Duck Mountain. b) Underground from Tijuana. c) A small store in Macon, Ga. d) None of the above. A: (d) The way some beer drinkers talk about water, you'd think Alice found it in Wonderland. Not that water isn't important to a beers taste. It is. Very important. But the fact is, virtually all brewers filter and further purify their brewing water. And Schlitz doesn't stop there. They put their water through what they believe is the most sophisticated purifying process of any brewer in the world. So when they're through, it's purer than the purest springwater.
