  • A blind experience MARCH 16, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 by CHIP HAMMOND Staff Writer Sunday, February 26, I went without sight for eight hours. It was a unique experience, but it wasn't nearly as frightening as I had expected it to be. At 1:30 p.m. Sharon, the girl that was to be my guide for the day, put the blinding bandages on my eyes in her room. The first task on the agenda would be to walk to my dorm, sort my laundry, carry it to the coin laundry and wash it. I had saved doing my laundry just for this special occasion. Walking to my room was my first experience of being blind. I walked very slowly and cautiously. I could walk inside buildings fairly easily without help as long as 1 stayed next to a wall with my hand on it at all time*. Walking up and down steps was difficult at first but 1 got accustomed to it pretty easily. Walking up stairs was easier because I didn't have to contend with sudden drop-offs. In my room I found my laundry box in my closet and dumped its contents on the floor. I then proceeded to sort darks from lights. Using knowledge of what clothes I had worn the week before, it was surprisingly easy to tell what color a piece of clothing was by its textures. I knew underwear and T-shirts were white, for example. I put dark clothes in one box and light clothes in another. After more trials and tribulations of walking blind— this time with two loads of clothing in my arms and only verbal commands from Sharon to tell me where to go—1 arrived at the laundromat. Sharon had to lead me to two Youl gel a good deal, and a good deal more at Ask about our student Discount MOUNTAINEER CHEVROLET 704-586-5565 SYLVA, N.C. EAST GATE SHOPPING CENTER Easter's Early! While they were washing we took a walk around the campus. This is when I first noticed that without sight it is yery difficult to perceive motion. As far as I was Concerned, the earth could have been slipping away beneath my feet as I walked and I could haw been getting now hire. When I walked n hit as though I wasn't going anywhere al all. Sharon had to put the laundry in tin- dryers. As Ihey dried. I almost tell asleep because ot the darkness and monotonous hum of the dryers. The laundry was done by 3:30 and 1 was exhausted. Ihe simple act of walking had never been so strenuous before. The next hour and a half was spent dozing as my guide put away my clothes and studied silently. Funny thing is. she didn't even know I was sleeping. At about 5, 1 attempted lo eat in the cafeteria. 1 yyas going to try to carry my own tray, but after considering how many obstacles 1 would have to overcome, viz. many tables and people, 1 decided to let Sharon make two trips. Trying to eat was a disaster. Maybe it would have been easier if anonymous people al other tables, knowing my plight, didn't laugh at me the whole lime; however, it's not as easy lo become embarrassed it sou can't see the people looking at you, so 1 took il all with a grain of salt. I had to finger all my food to tell where it was on the tray, and numerous times I put an empty fork in my mouth thinking there was something on it. 1 managed tO carry my empty tray to the dumbwaiter, because I figured I didn't haye as much lo lose if I dropped an empty tray. The only Other experiment 1 tried was letting Sharon rend a chapter to me out of a text book. My retention was fairly high. With 9:31) growing nigh, I "watched" IV. Ihat was easily tin- most frustrating thing I did all day. Listening to a TV show does nothing but arouse a yery aggravating curiosity, especially when someone sitting beside you is telling you how exciting the visuals are (it was a James Bond movie). I was almost tempted into regaining my sight premature)) . but I stuck it out. After eight hours. I was only slightly dizzy w hen I took the bandages off. OW77 JOS SCHUTZ hmwim .
