  • TUESDAY. OCTOBER 19, 1976 I HI WESTERN CAROLINIAN "~\ zS~Z*\ Ca*°-IMA\ SPORTS Honk Komodowski, Sports Editor Waters seeks 50th win Saturday Western Carolina Head Coach Bob Waters could pass a milestone in his still youthful coaching career Saturday afternoon when his 5-2 Catamounts meet Wofford College in Spartanburg. A win would give Waters his 50th win at WCU out of the 78 games he has coached. Although the Cats are likely to be favored in the 3:30 p.m. game at Wofford's Snyder Field, the Terriers served notice that they are far from running up the white flag this season alter a dismal start that saw them lose four of the first five games. Wofford surprised Newberry's 3-1 Indians last Saturday 23-0 on the road and hinted that the rebuilding this year under Head Coach Steve Satterfield may be nearing completion. "They have a good team," said Waters, "although their 2-4 record doesn't really indicate it. Somehow, it seems like everytime we get ready to play somebody, they get things going and get good." Last Saturday Western faced East Tennessee State, a team that got off to a slow start but toughened up and beat a ranked Western Kentucky team just prior to facing the Catamounts. WCU used its best defensive performance of the season to overcome ETSU's improvement and took a 14-0 victory. It was the first shutout for Western in 18 games. "If we could continue to play that well defensively, we'll be okay," said Waters of the effort that limited East Tennessee to just 27 yards rushing and 93 passing. This week's game will be WCU's second of four consecutive homecoming appearances, the last of which being their own. "Yeah, it's their homecoming," said Waters. "That means they'll be playing with alot of emotion and they'll be coming after us. They are a young team and have been improving." Western is well-aware that being underdogs doesn't effect the Terriers much. Wofford came to WCU last season as the underdog team and left with a 23-14 victory over the Cats. Western will still be without its two top wide receivers this week since Wayne Tolleson, the WCU split end and leading scorer, will still be out of action with a rib injury and Jeff Ciccone, the Cats' number one Catback (or flanker) is still out with a fractured ankle. Tolleson is a native of Spartanburg and had been the most exciting Catamount to watch up until his injury in the Jacksonville State win two weeks ago. Freshman Wayne Smith, who is starting at Catback in place of Ciccone, responded with a 49-yard touchdown catch against East Tennessee and appears to improve with each game. Darrell Lipford, the Cats' tailback and top all-star prospect, added 149 yards to his rushing total and now has 728 yards in the six gar es he has played in. Defensively, WCU's linebackers had their most impressive game of the season against ETSU with Mike Wade, Tommy Bow en and Frank Wilson accounting for 22 tackles in the game. Defensive safety Harvey Walker intercepted his 21 si pass ol his career, leaving him just two short of tying the WCU record of 23 held by David Rathburn. Walker has six interceptions this season. As ■ unit, the Cats' secondary is limiting the opposition to only 81.4 yards per game passing. As a team, WCU is averaging just under 300 yards per game in total offense, but averaging only 16 points per game. Wofford has been tough on the pass. also. 1 he Terrier secondary has given up just 84.5 yards per game passing. The top Terriers are senior running back Scott Tilley and quarterback Rick Cloningeron offense. Those two players have accounted for 80 per cent of the Wofford yardage so far this season. Darrell Lipford cuts through a hole on the way to 14-0 victory over East Tennessee. (Photo by Fred a big gain. Lipford gained 149 yards in the Cats' Barbour.) Basketball practice began Friday, team condition, attitude 'super' Pre-season basketball practice began at WCU Friday as it did at 703 NCAA schools, but for Fred Conley's Catamounts, it was something special. The initial practice session for the upcoming season was the first for WCU since it became a member of the Southern Conference and its basketball program was elevated to NCAA Division I status in August. "I am not sure how much our being classified as a major team and the Southern Conference had to do with it. but the condition and attitude of this team is just super." said Conley after Western's first workout. The trio of starters returning - Ike Mims, Jay Lassitcr and Thomas "Bubba" Wilson - combined to average nearly 45 points a game last winter and are expected to be regulars again, but with different roles. Conley hopes to move Mims, a not-too-physical 6'6". 185 pounder, from underneath to a wing and move in 6'8" 220 Alex Bell, a transfer with proven board ability. Improved George Dodkin. a 6'5" senior, could also figure into the post picture. WCU opens its schedule November 29 at home with Mars Hill and will play a total of 19 Division I games on a 25-game schedule. UNIVERSITY BOOK & SUPPLY STORE RECORD SALE SAVE!!
