Md . and lerrv Rutherford. SWingman from Walters State Community College, have signed w ilh the Catamounts. DesBordes played last year in Coach Morgan Woolen's highlv successful program at Dematha High ami was an honorable mention All Metro player in the Washington, D.C.arca, "He was one of those rare sophomores to plav for us and was a very good rcboundcr." said Woolen "In his three years on our squad, our teams won 80 and lost 15 against whal we consider the toughest prep competition in lhe countrv. We plav teams, the best we can find, from lhe Carolinas lo Louisville. Clarence was our defensive stopper." DesBordes was teammate ol NC Slate's Hawkeve Whitney at tabled Dematha. He average 10 rebounds per game lasl season, four blocked shots per game aud eight points per game. He was also named All-Tournament al ihe Louisville Prep Invitational last season. "He conies from one of the finest basketball schools in the nation and we teel he will he a fine plaver." said WCI Head Coach lied Conies "11,'s a ve,v good leaner, has excellent quickness and a super attitude. Rutherford played at Walters State in Morristown, linn., last season and averaged 13.7 points and 13.2 rebounds. \ strong 220 pounds. Rutherford played prep basketball at Everett High in Marvville. lenn . and was named All District, all Region and was a Iwo vear All tournament selection in the laviee's Classic. " Icrrv is a physical plaver that we can count on to plav at either a wing or post position. He is aggressive and rugged on the boards anil has a tine shooting range. We think he could very well step in at a starting position next vear." Conlev said. Western expects to sign one more plaver in the near future before closing its recruiting campaign. "We've now signed six plavers and we think that lour of the six could slcp in and plav next season. 1 think our staff has done a good job and that it will he reflected in our competitiveness nexl season." Photo by Drew Clark Western signs high school girl Western Carolina University has announced the signing of F.astern Randolph High's Sandra Frye to a women's basketball grant-in-aid for the 1977-78 season. Frye. a 5-foot-8 wing/guard, was Randolph County's most valuable basketball player last season and was an honorable mention all-statcr. She was an All Mid-State East selection for three years. All-County and All-Tournament for three years and last season was selected as the Mid-State East Conference plavcr-of-the-year. Five is also an outstanding women's track performer and held school records at Eastern Randolph in the low hurdles and discus. In basketball. Frye holds Eastern records for the most points scored in a single game (35) and most rebounds (21). WCU Coach Betty Westmoreland had previously announced the signing of Beth Crisp of Asheville's Reynolds High. The team also brought home eight individual In the powerlifting event. Alan Campus won the 165 lb. class. Ken Martin won the 190 lb. class, and Diane Horn won the 123 lb. class. All these lifters became the club's first number one finishers Also in the powerlifting contest. Wayne Murray took second in the 198 lb. class and Glen Helton also won second place m the 132 lb. class. Jill Kaufman and Mike Gentry took third place in their weight divisions. Kaufman won the 132 lb. class third place and Gentry won the 181 lb. class third place. Also. Mike McCall placed fourth in the 220 and under division. In the bench press competition, the club picked up two first places. Glen Helton won the 132 lb. class and Mike Harsell won the 148 lb. class.
