  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1977 History grad student likes O'Toole Dear Editor (whoever that may be). After reading the unwarranted, unjustified, and vicious attack on the newspaper and Dr. O'Toole, 1 feel an obligation to publically state that not all students at this university share the sophomoric attitudes expressed in that piece of vitriolic nonsense. First of all, the student paper has never paraded itself as the New York Times, nor should it be expected to do so. Ihe very term student signifies that we arc here to learn through our mistakes. Perhaps there exist among us students who feel that they belong behind the podium instead of the people who are there in their stead. Such a foolish, elitist attitude should never be condoned. But aside from this obvious misinterpretation of the real world on behalf of the authors of that glaring piece of aristocratic snobbery, the most serious mistake made was in their attitude towards Dr. O'Toole. Indeed they do misunderstand Dr. O'Toole, and should be even the more pitied because of it. Dr. O'Toolc's columns are among the best articles which appear in the paper. We should be glad that there exists among us one who feels that the students are important enough to warrant a little extra time and energy, in order to expose us to new and different ideas, which at times are sorely lacking. To cut oneself off from new learning ex periences is a sad commentary on how much one has managed to glean from one's education. Furthermore, if you cannot understand Dr. O'Toole's delightful satire, which appears from time to time, then 1 must say that you are lacking in a certain sort of intelligence which obviously your closed minds will never be able to comprehend, simply because you will not allow such flexibility in your personality. This business of not allowing a professor to publish in the student paper is a trite point at best. Above all. who are these people to run about righteously declaring who can and who cannot publish in the paper? That stuff smacks of fascism and inclinations favoring a censored press, and suggests who the true raving maniacs are on this campus. The paper seems destined to change quite a bit in the immediate future. What such a change will bring cannot be told, but 1 am obliged to admit to skepticism. Everybody wants to know, by the way, what the hell "tara for now" means? I think that it has some thing to do with Gone With the Wind. I suspect the worst.
