Bunuel is the greatest of Span;sh film makers and his fame in the United States rests upon two works: "The Young and the Damned" (shown on campus last year) and "Vi.- iteoa.*' Of the two, "Viridiana" is by far the master's greatest. The plot in Viridiana ii relatively simple. A voting Spanish novice (Viridiana) has just finished her long training to become a nun. She is persuaded by the mother superior to visit a widowed uncle and the outside world for the last time before entering the cloister. Don Jaime, the uncle, is struck by his niece's beauty and her resemblance to his dead wife. The incestuous courtship begins and you can guess what follow s^Or can you? Can flesh uctrothed to God be wooed away by mere mortals? Bunuel wrestles with (x>d and the evil of his creatures on earth in V'ridiana. I leave it to you to decide who wins. Suffice to say that the mov'e was so controversial when it was first shown in 1961 that it was banned in Spain and censored by the Vatican. Indeed, there would be no Viridiana had Bunuel not smuggled a print of the film out of Spain. At the same time, it won the Cannes award for the best film of 1961. If for no other reason than Bunucl's sacrilegious version of the I^ast Supper at the end of the film, "Viridiana" richly deserved all three of the above distinctions, If you want to see what incensed the Pope, angered Franco. and pleased the French, come see "Viridiana" at 7:30, Tuesday evening, in Forsyth Auditorium, sponsored by the Film Conspiracy. The Senate approved the appointment of Df.nnette McYoung to Supreme Court at last night's meeting. Resolutions to define and establish a Homecoming Committee and to amend the Traffic Codes were passed. A Homecoming Comm'.ttee will be established to plan the events of next year's Homecoming, It will also write a budget to be sent to the University, The committee will be composed of 20 members with other members to be added as deemed necessary. The amendment to Traffic Codes passed with one negative vote. This resolution provides for the accumulation period of fines to be on a quarterly basis instead of tie yearly bas's that now exists. This resolution was amended to read "term busis*' as Western will soon go to the semester system. The Senc.te was informed that Traffic Codes had been approved by the State and could go into effect, if approved next September. PEST IN YOUR ROOM? \ Hall visitation hours violated We Hove Just The Thing VENUS FLY ■ TRAP FROM PAGE 1 couple again refused, Condlin said. Smith tried to show the university was negligent in not posting visitation policy in each "living unit" but Avis said living units were halls and not rooms and that she had posted the regulations in each hall and in the lobby of the dorm at the beginning of the quarter. The attorney general requested the court sentence them to 15 work-hours. Smith asked the court to take into consideration that it was the first offense for both parties, that they both were cooperative with the residence hall director, and that both admitted guilt. In one other case, Steven Cohen was given a continuance after being charged with a visitation policy violation. Smith told :he court Cohen's only witness was out of town. %wsm$m@.> -'smmtsmmwmmmmmm-mmmmimimm $2.50 mmy Gnn&airy PLANTING SATISFACTION Between Cullowhee and Cashiers W»#eT£.VE& mm ipmw ' ^^^.^■♦^♦-♦-♦^^^ BUDWEISER OF ASHEVILLE INC Colt Wweiser Busck Mills Gap Road Asheville, N.C. 28802 Office - 254-3250
