College is better than $12 a week After I graduated from high school in 1935, I turned down a good, steady, $12-a-week job in favor of going to college. It was the smartest thing I ever did. Over the years, I've parlayed that $12 a week into a prestigious university administrator's job, any number of honorariums from speaking at phoney World Food Crisis conferences, a $150,000 mansion, a solid gold, state-owned Chrysler with only one careful owner and less than 10,000 miles on the odometer, not to mention the trailer hitch; a boat, trailer, and boathouse down at Lake Glenville; and all the tax-free gas I can lay my hands on down at the pump in front of the steam plant. College opened up doors for me that otherwise would have stayed closed. Now it's my job to help other people float through the flood gate. At Western Caro- lina University we can open up new opportunities for you. That's why I'm here to tell you about Western's latest skam — uh ~ plan to help out young people. The WCU Summer Cretins Program is designed to lend a helping hand to those who would otherwise never be able to enter college. The theme of this year's course is, "Summer Cretins, Some're Not." What we do is to give you the skills you will need to scrape through McKelvin's Comp I with a "D-minus," or at least to make you look alert enough in class that he thinks you're getting "F" because you aren't doing your homework. Anyway, we'll be getting your tuition money for summer, fall and winter at least. The two courses offered this summer are Math 0001, Tentative Introduction to Basic 6th Grade Pre-Algebra, and English 0015, Introduction to Monosyllabic Syntax. You will be rubbing elbows with some of the finest minds on our faculty. In fact, we would even let them teach other courses if they would change their registration to Democratic. The Summer Cretins Program is no attempt at tokenism. WCU is- committed, through SCP, to take affirmative action to give our retarded citizens a real opportunity for a college education. There are just as many people below 100 as above 100. If you are going to be institutionalized, why not do so at our institution? Students will have the opportunity to complement and enrich their undergraduate experience by participating in a foreign study program in a country which is both steeped in tradition and progressive while it enjoys one of the most stable governments in South America. Excursions are planned to provide a deeper understanding of Colombia's history, geography and cultural life. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable but not required, and registration in Spanish language courses is optional. ACADEMIC PROGRAM: 1) Five to ten hours of credit applicable to General Education Requirements or to advanced level programs. 2) Five to ten hours credit of Spanish language courses, optional for all students in the program. 3) A maximum of five hours credit of Spanish language courses, optional for all students in the program. 3) A maximum of five hours credit in independent study project, optional. Research on a selected topic which must have direct bearing on some aspect of the host country from resource materials found in the host country and be approved by an independent study supervisor. Project must be submitted for approval prior to departure. PROGRAM COSTS: These figures are based on the 1975 costs. Increases in prices may necessitate an adjustment which would be announced before departure. Travel, Miami to Cali roundtrip, group excursions, attractions, transfers and incidental expenses. 2. Tuition and all fees. 3. Room and board for entire program. TRAVEL: Students will travel by commercial carrier from Miami to Colombia in early January (exact date to be specified later.) The return flight is scheduled for early March. APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application forms are available in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages office, 103 McKee. The forms should be completed and returned as soon as possible to that office. Deadline for application is October 1, 1975. Those participants selected after the screening procedure will be required to make a $50 deposit, Those students contemplating participation are asked to give their name and address to the secretary in 103 McKee, before the end of the sprine ouartpr.
