  • Page 4 THE WESTERN (■AjtoUNLy Parting shots The most temporary part of any university is its students. A fresh crew comes in each year — eager to learn or have a good time — and the four-year (or longer) veterans pack their bags and leave. So it will be with me, but first my epilogue. This year you've read a bastard form of advocacy journalism. We picked our enemies and let you know who they were: H. F. Robinson at times, the SBI, Bruce Wike and the county commissioners, several administrators, low standards and more. Generally we went at them with all guns blazing, sometimes hitting and sometimes not. At the same time we championed the students, the underdogs, or the people we thought were right in an argument. That has gone on for a year. The next editor will no doubt make some changes in style, policy, approach, etc. But there is one basic tenet which must remain: a dedication to let the readers know the things that are happening which affect them. However, the ability to inform the public isn't the only power of the press — it can blast hell out of politicians caught acting against the public will and trust, administrators ignoring student pleas for better treatment, and a landlord taking advantage of his tenants simply because they lack both the courage and knowledge to fight back. This paper should never hesitate to defend the students or anyone else from oppressive tactics from those with superior power. But the ability to do that is based on people willing to do the task. For this paper to become more effective, the new editor will have to assemble a large staff of writers who will sometimes sacrifice grades for the newspaper. Too often we operated with a skeleton staff this year, and they did an admirable job. Editing this paper has been challenging, rewarding and frustrating at the same time. The challenge stems from the vast amount of problems existing on such a small campus, and the reward comes partly from seeing your ideas implemented. However, frustration is also present because changes — even badly needed ones — often come too slowly and four years are up and some still aren't attended. But another reward has been the experience of working with the newspaper staff, and work we did, often into the early hours of the morning. At times the paper wasn't put to bed until the birds were already chirping and the Brown Cafeteria workers had already started breakfast. Was it worth it? Not financially. But that will be my final words? No philosophy, no recipe for success, but instead my thanks to my staff for a tremendous job, at times a difficult one, but always an important one. I also thank the student body for its support, and wish them and the University a bright future, reminding them that it's possible only with a free and vigorous press. Keep it that way. Dwight A. Yours truly, Jack M. Hennessee (Editor's Note: Hennessee is president of the large W.C. Hennessee Lumber Co., Inc. near Sylva and a member of the WCU Board of Trustees. A letter to Hennessee concerning the airport follows). Dear Mr. Hennessee, We operate five aircraft in support of UNC School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. Our efforts to extend the expertise of the School of Medicine and the Asheville Area Health Education Center into the western counties has been frustrated by the absence of a dependable air operation west of Asheville. There is simply no airport west of Asheville which has an instrument approach. The majority of the airports are also located in the valley bottoms where early morning fog frequently makes them unusable before noon. I am very distressed to hear from a secondary source that court action has been taken to stop the work on the mountain top airport between Cullowhee and Sylva. We were looking forward to having one airport in the western part of the state that was not located in the bottom of a valley immediately adjacent to a very fine moisture source. Therefore I am interested in doing whatever I can to help move construction forward on this airport. Secondly, we are interested in trying to get instrument approaches to the airports at Franklin, Andrews and Bryson City. I am enclosing a sketch which I made up during a recent trip to Franklin indicating how a possible non-directional beacon approach could be flown into Macon County Airport. Similar approaches could be made parallel to the valleys at Bryson City and Andrews. Although the minimums would necessarily be relatively high (compared with airports in the flat lands) it would be a tremendous improvement to have some legal form of instrument approach west of Asheville. We would appreciate anything which you can do to help to move such projects forward. Reliable sources indicate that the State Division of Aeronautics is willing to provide the remainder of the funds and work verv closely on a project for a NDB approach if the local airport authorities will request the approach hardware and provide about $2,500 as their share of the cost. Even though these are not affluent times, this kind of money ought to be available. Very sincerely yours, Earl D.
